Two points adrift of leaders Napoli, Inter have the opportunity to go top of the league, at least for a few hours, with a win on Saturday night.
Simone Inzaghi’s men have already lost five times this season in all competitions, one defeat more than in the entire 2023/24 campaign and have 12 points less in the table compared to a year ago.
Inter’s biggest issues have emerged against top sides in Italy as they collected 12 out of possible 27 points in games against clubs occupying the first seven positions in the table.
However against teams from the bottom half of the standings Inter have been extremely consistent, winning six out of six of their home matches.
The hosts have responded in style after each setback they suffered this season as they went on to win five games in a row after the 2-1 defeat in the derby back in September 2024 and did the same last December after losing to Bayern Leverkusen.
In fact the Nerazurri have failed to win the next game after a defeat only once (last season, the 1-1 draw against Napoli after the 2-1 suffered at the hand of Atletico Madrid) in the past two campaigns.
This ability to rebound after setbacks injects an additional psychological edge and the anticipation of a top-of-the-table clash with Napoli next week might spur them to start strongly against Genoa.
But, despite Inter’s impressive home record against I Rossoblù (no defeats in the past 21 years), it might be as easy as it could appear.
Since former Inter midfielder Patrick Viera sits on Genoa’s bench Il Grifone has achieved 20 points in 13 games, and would be ninth in Serie A.
Their 10-point margin over Parma, currently third from bottom, provides them ample breathing space, allowing them to focus on performance over survival.
The visitors have the third worst away attack (10 goals) of Italy’s top flight, but in the past four months have rarely suffered heavy defeats.
In fact they’ve only lost one game, 3-1 away at Rome, by more than a goal margin and kept a clean sheet at San Siro (0-0) against AC Milan.

Viera’s men have seven clean sheets on the road during first halves so far and might be able to limit Inter’s impetus.

Inter Milan vs Genoa Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups Prediction: A surprising choice up front
Simone Inzaghi faces selection dilemmas, mostly linked to Marcus Thuram’s current form and the fact Mehdi Taremi’s performances (only two goals this season) haven’t impressed. Joaquin Correa, who started only one Serie A game this season (where he scored and provided two assists), might get the nod.
Inzaghi is likely to deploy his best formation, with Benjamin Pavard and Alessandro Bastoni in the back three, and Nicolo Barella and Hakan Çalhanoğlu in midfield.
