Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction: Against The Grain At The Bridge
England, Premier League, Thursday , April 3rd, 20:00 (UK)
Mauricio Pochettino was dismissed as Chelsea manager after a year in charge in the summer. The Argentine clashed with the club hierarchy over transfer strategy and was criticised for his training methods. After winning the Championship with Leicester City, Enzo Maresca was appointed the new manager of Chelsea. The Italian started well but has come in for criticism in recent months for his sides performances, particularly the two losses to Brighton in a week.
Despite all the noise around Maresca, Chelsea still sit fourth in the league but will be anxiously checking their shoulders with the chasing pack hot on their heels. If they lose to Tottenham, they can realistically drop to seventh – a position that would put Maresca under real pressure. Only the top three have a better home record than Chelsea who have won four on the bounce at Stamford Bridge. While these four wins have come against struggling sides West Ham, Wolves, Southampton and Leicester, the victories, bar against West Ham, were comfortable and something to build off.
While the reverse fixture saw seven goals, a lower-scoring game is expected this time. Games at Stamford Bridge are averaging three goals, while 10/14 have seen under 3.5 goals.
Tottenham are in the midst of a disastrous season, sat 14th in the Premier League. Ange Postecoglu is second in the betting to be the next manager to be sacked and is under immense pressure to keep his job, despite his Europa League exploits.
While Tottenham have been poor away from home – ranked 15th, defensively they have been solid, boasting the fifth fewest goals conceded on their travels. Of their 14 away games, nine have seen under 3.5 goals, with their away games seeing an average of three goals per game.
With both teams home/away averages and the statistics leaning towards the unders, the value looks to lie on under 3.5 goals.
