Newcastle vs Brentford Prediction: Team News and Lineups Preview
Josh Ingram is on hand to analyse a match-up that should be interesting to watch if anything, but looks increasingly hard to call in this Newcastle vs Brentford prediction betting preview.
Newcastle are on a high after winning the Carabao Cup and ending their decades-long drought. Eddie Howe’s squad are seemingly motoring in the right direction and up the Premier League table, but football isn’t always straightforward. Brentford are not a team many will want to play at the moment. The Bees make games awkward and have enough firepower to hurt opposing teams, as shown in their five-win streak away from home. It’s all set up to be an exciting clash where the away side could get some joy.
Newcastle vs Brentford Prediction: Bees to dampen Magpies spirits
England, Premier League, Wednesday, April 2nd, 19:45 (UK)
Backing against Newcastle might seem strange, considering they are in such a jubilant mood. Their last fixture was the deserved Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool. Regardless, the upcoming selection looks appealing from a price point of view. The Magpies don’t have a record as good as you might presume at home.
When at St James’ Park, Newcastle have won 7/13, with the +0.75 Asian Handicap winning six times already this season, and it would have been a half-loss in four of the seven wins. There is a precedent to back against Newcastle at home this season. It’s an angle I have done with a lot of in-form teams in the midtable region, with Bournemouth a similar price when they won 4-1 in January.
Brentford’s uptick in away form is the main reason for pursuing this bet away from the Gtech Stadium. Of late, they have been in stupendous form. For a time in the first half of the season, they were one of the worst travellers in the top flight. This has changed in the last six games, winning five in a row. Three were close-fought wins by one goal, and the other two were drubbings dealt out to Southampton and Leicester. They are a well-drilled team under Thomas Frank. Brentford can make it a tough game for any team, as they showed last time out against Bournemouth.
BETSiE favours Newcastle, giving them a 58.6% chance of winning the game with a projected goal total of 1.99. Therefore, BETSiE hands Brentford or draw at 41.4% with a projected goal of 1.07, which isn’t ideal for this selection.
This can easily end up being a shootout on Wednesday evening as Brentford concede a large number of goals, averaging 1.55 per90, but this drops when they go on their travels down to 1.29. Down the other end is where they are lethal; Brentford are the sixth-highest scorers with 50 goals across 29 games. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa are both having their best-ever season goals-wise. They will undoubtedly be the leading men to hurt a Newcastle defence missing Lewis Hall’s presence.
How much can you read into the most recent weekend of celebrations with the open-top bus parade through Newcastle impacting their upcoming performance? It’s probably negligible, but if there is one week where fans could be expecting a dodgy performance, it would be this one.

Newcastle vs Brentford Team News: Defensive injuries for both
Howe has a few problems in his backline. They handled these issues well in the cup final win, but Lewis Hall’s absence will hurt them long-term. Alongside the young Englishman in the treatment room is Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, leaving Howes’s options limited. It’s likely the same back four from a fortnight ago will start. Anthony Gordon is currently battling against a hip injury, so he won’t be rushed into anything. Therefore, Isak should have Barnes and Murphy on his flanks. The standard midfield three are expected to start, which always boost Newcastle’s chances of winning.
The long-term injuries for the Bees aren’t players that feature a lot, so they aren’t too much of a miss, but Thomas Frank would like them back sooner rather than later. These are Fabio Carvalho, Igor Thiago and Joshua Dasilva. It’s a similar story with continuity in defence, with the same backline that won at Bournemouth, which will start with Ajer, Collins, Pinnock, and Lewis-Potter. Aaron Hickey and Michael Kayode will miss the squad due to injury, meaning defensive cover is limited. The most important thing for Brentford is that Mbuemo, Wissa and Damsgaard are back from international duty, fully fit and firing.
Newcastle possible starting lineup:
Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Barnes
Brentford possible starting lineup:
Flekken; Ajer, Collins, Pinnock, Lewis-Potter; Norgaard, Janelt; Mbeumo, Damsgaard, Schade; Wissa
Match Stats: One sided in Newcastle’s favour
- They have met seven times in the Premier League with Newcastle winning five times, drawing once and Brentford solitary win coming this season.
- On route to their cup win Newcastle beat Brentford 3-1 at home just before christmas thanks to a Tonali brace.
- In the past three meetings Yoane Wissa has scored in all three and also providing one assist. He likes facing the Magpies.
