LDU Quito vs Mushuc Runa: Hosts to hold firm once more

Ecuador, LigaPro Serie A, Saturday 2nd December, 23:00

The Sudamericana champions are once again dominating their domestic league. Having collected 33 points from 14 matches, they sit top by four points. However, what’s most impressive is their defence.

Having only conceded three goals in these 14 matches, they’ve proven extremely difficult to break down. They aren’t a team who will score plenty, but with a stern defence, they are proving why they are a side worthy of dominating not only in Ecuador, but across the continent.

Even more impressively, LDU Quito have yet to concede in seven home matches, while their next opponents, Mushuc Runa, have only scored two in six matches on their travels.

Goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez has been a key figure between the sticks for his club and country, and the 36-year-old continues to prove his worth as his career draws to a close.

With LDU Quito going from strength to strength, this doesn’t appear to be the game in which they’ll break their impressive home record – and priced generously, it’s worth sticking with them to come out with yet another clean sheet.

Burnley vs Sheffield United: Desperate Times, Desperate Measures

England, Premier League, Saturday, December 2nd 15:00

Saturday sees two of the Premier League’s strugglers square off. Burnley are rooted to the bottom of the table and many are writing off their chances of survival even at this early stage. Vincent Kompany’s side have struggled to transition to the top flight but expect them to take the game to their relegation rivals here in a bid to close the gap to safety.

Sheffield United are a point above Burnley coming into this one. Their win over Wolves and draw with Brighton prior to the international break gave them a life line but things aren’t looking good for the side with an xGA of 32.84 in the Premier League this season.

Kompany will know that failing to pick up all three points in this fixture will leave the team in dire straits so expect them to pepper the Sheffield United goal in pursuit of victory here. Crystal Palace are the only side in the bottom half to visit Turf Moor this season and the Clarets managed 17 shots in that one.

The Blades are conceding the most shots in the league by some distance. Their opponents are averaging 19 shots per game this season. The 2nd most shots against in the division is 16.46. Paul Heckingbottom’s side conceded 23 shots at home to Bournemouth last weekend.

Monza vs Juventus: ‘boring’ is Allegri’s perfect scenario

Italy, Serie A, 1st December, 19:45 (UK time)

Serie A’s youngest manager, and former Juventus player, Raffaele Palladino will try to repeat last season’s exploits when Monza beat the Bianconeri both home (1-0, in their first ever Serie A win) and away (2-0).

The hosts have only lost one (1-0 to Roma) of their last nine Serie A games and once again confirmed in their 1-1 draw at Cagliari that they are not afraid to attack: they’re fifth for shots and fourth for possession.

Since their debut in Serie A, Monza have drawn 16 games (only Bologna and Udinese have shared the spoils more times), and they’ve only lost one of their last nine games played at the Brianteo.

Their ability to find spaces on the wings could cause problems to Juve who, on the other hand, come into this game with their morale boosted by the 1-1 draw against Inter Milan last Sunday.

Allegri’s men’s main goal in the ‘Derby d’Italia’ was to not get beaten and to remain two points behind the Nerazzurri. This mindset, coupled with Inter’s reluctance to attack in the second half, produced an extremely dull game that strengthened the Bianconeri ambition to challenge for the Scudetto.

But, despite their position in the table, emotions are scarce when it comes to Juve.

Seven of their last eight games have seen less than 2.5 goals scored and since Allegri returned to Turin in 2021 58 out of 89 (65%) games ended with less than 2.5 goals: three 0-0 draws, twelve 1-1 draws, twenty-five 1-0 wins and eighteen 2-0 victories.

Stevenage vs Port Vale: Boro’s FA Cup love affair to continue

England, FA Cup, Saturday, December 2nd, 15:00 (UK)

Last season’s FA Cup giant-killers Stevenage have the chance to book their place in the third round when they host Port Vale.

Steve Evans’ side are flying in the league and sit fourth in League One. Boro are unbeaten in six in the league (W4 D2) and have kept four clean sheets in those games.

And this is a competition they take seriously after reaching the fourth round last season. That run saw them come from behind to beat Premier League Aston Villa at Villa Park before they found the trip to Stoke a bridge too far.

On paper, this looks like the perfect opportunity to reach the third round once again. They face a Port Vale side who are out of form with the pressure mounting on manager Andy Crosby.

The Valiants defeat at Shrewsbury last weekend means it’s 10 league games without a win (L7 D3) – a spell that’s seen them fail to score in five of those. Some may point to their EFL Cup run, which sees them in the quarter-finals.

However, they’ve had the luck of the draw, which has seen them come up against three League Two opponents. And when you look at the league pyramid, they’ve only beaten Burton – in this comp and in a replay – who are higher, albeit only by two places.

Stevenage will offer Port Vale a stronger test, and I expect them to have the measure of the visitors. These sides did play out a goalless draw last month where Stevenage outshot Vale 12-8, but it was just a lack of composure in front of goal that cost Boro.
