Fortaleza vs Palmeiras: Visitors to maintain first-place advantage

Brazil, Serie A, Sunday 26th November, 21:30

Predicting what’s going to happen in Brazil’s Serie A is a bold move – especially after two defeats on the bounce – but I’m sticking to my guns and hoping to get back on track on Sunday evening.

Fortaleza are arguably one the best opponents for Palmeiras to face. There aren’t too many teams waiting for the season to end with so much going on at both ends of the table, but Sunday’s hosts are one of those.

They’ve been crawling to the finish line – and after their Sudamericana final defeat, they’ve not been able to pick themselves up. On an eight-match winless run, including six defeats, Palmeiras will be hoping they can silence the Castelao crowd early on.

Since their 2-0 defeat to Atletico MG, Abel Ferreira’s side has won six of the last seven, and Real Madrid-bound Endrick has been at the heart of the action. Goals against Botafogo, Inter and Athletico PR are why he was called up to the Brazilian national team.

The current Serie A champions know what it takes at this stage of the season, and with Botafogo bottling it, Palmeiras can put three more vital points on the board against one of the most out-of-form teams in the league.

Bologna vs Torino: rampant Toro could leapfrog the hosts

Italy, Serie A, 27th November, 19:45 (UK time)

Bologna are one of the most entertaining teams to watch in Serie A and they rightly receive a lot of praise. But Thiago Motta’s team do not score enough goals in relation to the way they control games: they are fifth for ball possession, but only 15th for the number of shots taken. Before the international break, they lost their first game, 2-1 to Fiorentina, after 11 positive results.

The lack of cutting edge, combined with the absence of a proven goalscorer (Riccardo Orsolini and Joshua Zirkzee have netted four apiece so far) sometimes see them getting stuck against well-drilled, mid-table, oppositions which is exactly what Torino are.

Bologna go toe-to-toe against everyone and, thanks to their fearless approach, have taken points out of top sides in Italy but, at the same time, they’ve drawn 18 out of 50 games since the last campaign.

After a run of five winless games, Torino have rediscovered form: they’re now unbeaten in three matches and in their 1-1 draw at Monza (where they should have had a penalty in the second half), they confirmed they’re a very good away side, having lost only one of their last four matches on the road.

Since last March only Inter have won more away games (nine out of 12) than Torino (7 of 12). The Granata have also kept seven away clean sheets in the same period.

They’ll be without Perr Schuurs (out for the rest of the season) and Samuele Ricci, but the return to fitness of Duvan Zapata and the good performance with Italy of captain Alessandro Buongiorno are very encouraging signs.

Aalesund vs Viking: Visitors too strong against rock-bottom opponents

Norway, Eliteserien, Sunday 26th November, (16:00 UK)

Aalesund are already relegated with two games remaining and have cemented their spot at the bottom of the Eliteserien table. It has been a miserable campaign for the club and they have lost a massive 20 out of 28 league matches this season. There is no question that Aalesund are the worst team in the Norwegian top flight. They have scored just 22 goals which is by far the fewest of any side and an appallingly low tally in a high-scoring league like this. At the other end of the field their 65 total conceded averages at a massive 2.42 per game.

A couple of months ago Viking looked like being a championship contender but a poor run of results means they might not even finish in the top three. The team from Stavanger won a magnificent 12 out of 13 games during a stunning mid-season run but folded to lose 4 out of 5. They did finally get back on the winning trail last week with a well-fought 2-1 victory vs Sarpsborg. Viking just need to win their final two games and hope the likes of Brann and Tromso drop points. To not even qualify for Europe after looking like potentially winning the title would be a bitter blow.

This should be an easy 3 points for Viking against an unmotivated opponent who have nothing to play for. Viking are by far the better team anyway so it’s a surprise to see a -1 Asian handicap available on the visitors at 1.84. The main Asian line should kick off -1.25 or even -1.5 such is the gulf in class, but more importantly, focus and motivation at this stage of the season.

  • Selection: Viking -1 Asian Handicap
