The Expert’s Acca: Expert Tips and Predictions From bettingexpert This Weekend

After four out of five profitable selections last weekend, the bettingexpert lot are back again for another instalment of the Expert’s Acca. Jack Wright gets the Schlagers in in the Bundesliga and Steve Wyss tends to his rosy garden in Sweden.

Elsewhere, Daniele Fisichella does what he does best; Serie A, whilst Nathan Joyes takes on another South American angle in his favoured kind of Serie A in Brazil.

RB Leipzig vs Bochum: Get the Schlagers in after Leipzig Bulls-doze bottom dwellers Bochum

Germany, Bundesliga, Saturday 7th October, 14:30 (UK)

I try to avoid sides who have had European commitments ahead of their domestic weekend fixture, especially when their opponents have had a free week. However, I’m prepared to make an exception here for an RB Leipzig side who couldn’t have wished for better scheduling.

At the time of writing, Marco Rose’s side have yet to take on the might of treble winners Manchester City in their Champions League Group G clash. A third season in a row, the two sides have met in Europe’s premier club competition.

The strength of Die Roten Bullen’s home form is perfectly illustrated in those previous four clashes. Despite losing the last four meetings by an aggregate of 15-6, they won one and drew one on home soil against Pep’s men. Leipzig have started this season very well, winning seven of their nine fixtures in all competitions, opening their campaign with an impressive 3-0 defeat of Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup.

Rose would have been disappointed to see his side throw away a 2-0 lead over the same opponents in their league meeting last weekend. But the 2-2 draw does mean his side have only lost to the in-form Bayer Leverkusen – winners for this column only last week.

The 47-year-old has turned The Red Bull Arena into something of a fortress, winning 19 of 24 games in all competitions since taking charge of RBL, losing only twice and with a positive goal difference of 36. An average of +1.89 per game.

Only Dortmund had a better home record in the German top flight last season, with Bochum being dispatched 4-0 when they visited nearly a year ago to the day. Die Unabsteigbaren scored the fewest goals on the road last term (12), contributing to them registering the worst goal difference of -28. Only Hertha, who were relegated after finishing bottom, collected fewer points on the road than their nine.

Thomas Letsch’s side have also got off to a terrible start in the new campaign. They are third from bottom without a win to their name and have already been battered 7-0 and 5-0 in away games at Bayern and Stuttgart, respectively.

The likes of Lois Openda, Xavi Simons and Xaver Schlager, to name but three of a host of talent for the home side, will be licking their lips at coming up against the league’s most porous defence. Odds for a home win are understandably prohibitive, but I am happy to take the -1.75 handicap here. This means we pick up at least a partial win should Leipzig win by two goals—a victory by the expected three or more returns a full payout.

Vasco vs São Paulo: Survival scrap back on for hosts

Brazil, Serie A, Saturday 7th October, 22:30 (UK)

Vasco’s good run of form came to an end with a crushing 4-1 defeat to relegation rivals Santos last weekend. However, a highly controversial penalty and a wonderful performance from Marcos Leonardo was the difference – and there’s no reason why Vasco can’t get back on track.

They return home on Saturday against a Sao Paulo side which has collected just five points on the road this season – failing to win a single away match.

On the flip side, Vasco has won four consecutive home matches and, prior to the Santos match, had built huge momentum, which took them out of the relegation zone for the first time this campaign.

A 5-1 demolition job over Coritiba, 4-2 over Fluminense, and 1-0 victories over Atletico MG and Gremio are all massively eye-catching results.

It’ll be Vasco’s home form that keeps them in Serie A next campaign, but they are firmly on track for that. If they can shake off last week’s disappointment, they have proven to be highly capable against anyone in this league at home.

  • Selection: Vasco -0.25 Asian Handicap
  • Best Odds: 2.05

Juventus vs Torino: lacklustre Juve need a reaction in the derby

Italy, Serie A, 7th October, 17:00 (UK time)

Massimiliano Allegri was the happiest of the two managers after Juventus earned a 0-0 draw on Sunday against Atalanta. With a depleted front line due to the absence of Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik (who are both set to miss the Turin derby on Saturday), the Bianconeri did very little to get the three points in Bergamo and were saved by Wojciech Szczęsny (with the help of the woodwork) in the second half.

After a couple of encouraging performances against Udinese and Lazio, Juventus seemed to have reverted to the risk-averse version of themselves: they’re eight for shots in Serie A (no surprise their xG in Bergamo was only 0.20xG) but have kept two consecutive clean sheets after the Sassuolo horror-show.

Torino also have some injury issues, as they’ll be playing the derby without both centre-backs Alessandro Buongiorno and his natural replacement Saba Sazonov.

They’ve only conceded seven goals so far, but their attacking numbers look very inconsistent: they are third from bottom for both xG in Serie A (5.56xG) and shots taken (67, on average less than 10 per game). Last year’s top goalscorer, Antonio Sanabria (no goals so far this season), was rested in the 0-0 draw against Verona, but it’s unlikely he’ll feature from the start alongside Duvan Zapata.

Juventus are unbeaten in the last 18 derbies in all competitions, having won fourteen times. Torino, under Ivan Juric, have become more solid but tend to struggle against top sides: since 2021, they have only won two games (against AC Milan at home and Lazio at the Olimpico) against top-six teams.

  • Selection: Juventus to Score First and Under 3.5 Goals

Varbergs vs Djurgården : Garden nice and rosy for trip to Varbergs

Sweden, Allsvenskan, Sunday 8th October, 16:30 (UK)

Varbergs will be relegated if they fail to win this game, but they have shown few signs recently that they are going to end the season with anything other than a whimper. They have lost a massive 17 out of 25 Allsvenskan fixtures this year and have a 21:54 goal differential. Three rounds ago, they were utterly embarrassed 0-7 away to Sirius.

They have regained some sort of respectability by only suffering tight defeats to Hammarby & Elfsborg, but this is clearly a team who are massively struggling. They were outshot 39-8 in their last two games but only lost by a one-goal margin on each occasion. They were fortunate not to take some further severe beatings.

Varbergs are ripe for the picking, and Djurgården are next up to claim what should be a comfortable 3 points. The Stockholm-based club are fourth in the table and have been inconsistent at times, but they should have few concerns in a fixture like this. Djurgården have only won three away games this season but, in recent weeks, have won 2-0 at Norrkoping and 1-0 at Mjallby, both locations which are far more demanding than this one. Midfielder Hampus Findell is suspended, but the majority of their squad will be available.

Taking the visitors on a -1.25 Asian handicap at odds-against looks like a pretty safe bet. At worst, Djurgården will surely win the game, but it should logically be by a comfortable margin facing a team who have given up long ago.

  • Expert: Steve Wyss
  • Selection: Djurgården -1.25 Asian Handicap
  • Best Odds: 2.06
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 8/10 (TRACKED BET)
