It’s a selection in the National League South for Matthew O’Regan, alongside a Bundesliga pick from Jack Wright and a trip to Serie A, as is the norm, for Daniele Fisichella. There could be a lucrative opening of a League Two eISA for Matt Kirby, whereas Steve Wyss plans to Hammar home an Asian Handicap punt in Sweden.

Union Berlin vs Hoffenheim: Vorsprung Durch Ziele

Germany, Bundesliga, Saturday, September 23rd, 14:30

If you are looking for goals then the German Bundesliga is the place to go. After the opening four rounds of fixtures (38 games in total) there have been 138 goals at an average of 3.83.

That is the highest average of all the top five European leagues. Beating the English Premier League into 2nd place with an average of 3.08 and just over one goal per game more than La Liga which ranks 5th.

An incredible 78% of games in the German top flight have seen over 2.5 goals and there is yet to be a goalless draw. There were 38 goals in total on Matchday 4, which made it the highest-scoring weekend so far this term. Of the 18 teams involved only Augsburg failed to hit the back of the net.

Odds of 1.86 for over 2.5 goals would be hard to ignore regardless of the sides involved. However, Union Berlin and Hoffenheim are two of eight teams that have seen all four of their fixtures this campaign feature at least three goals.

Union have the small matter of an away trip to Real Madrid on Wednesday evening as Die Eisernen embark on their debut Champions League campaign. Manager Urs Fischer will be looking for his side to get back to winning ways when they return to domestic action. Having lost back to back games following a start to the season which saw them score four times in both fixtures.

In contrast Hoffenheim have a clear week to prepare. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side are up to 5th in the embryonic Bundelsiga table having responded to an opening day defeat to Freiburg with three straight wins. Impressively scoring three times in each of them with two of those coming away from home.

Bath City vs Dover: Shower of goals for Bath

England, National League South, Saturday, September 23rd, 15:00 (UK)

Bath City host Dover at Twerton Park in the sixth tier of English football.

Club legend Jerry Gill has overseen a remarkable season for Bath thus far, with the Romans sitting at the top of the National League South with 20 points from nine games. This is mainly due to their impressive goalscoring form, with 19 goals scored in nine games. Scott Wilson and Jordan Thomas have been in fine fettle in front of goal, combining for 11 goals between them.

Of their nine games so far, Bath have scored in every game, scoring two plus in seven of these. Their four home games have seen Gill’s side score 10 goals, and all four have seen them score at least two.

They host a Dover side that has been in freefall over the last couple of years. Last season, the Whites stayed up by the skin of their teeth on goal difference, and they are struggling already this campaign, sitting one place off the bottom. Mitch Brundle’s side has yet to keep a clean sheet, conceding two or more in four of their last five and five times in total thus far.

After a chaotic summer of controversial departures, Dover do not look settled on or off the pitch, and league leaders Bath will fancy their chances of scoring at least twice on Saturday.

  • Expert: Matthew O’Regan
  • Selection: Bath City Over 1.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.80

  • Stake: 10/10 (TRACKED BET)

Torino vs Roma: Juric’s men could profit from visitors’ cup fatigue

Italy, Serie A, Sunday, September 24th, 19:45 (UK)

On Monday afternoon, in Salerno, we finally admired Torino playing like their manager wanted: they were dynamic, intense and with hunger.

The Granata were helped by two goals by Nemanja Radonjic (who has already scored three this season) and the excellent movements of Duvan Zapata. In midfield Tameze, Bellanova and Ricci provided quantity and quality, while Lazaro and Bellanova were a constant threat on the wings.

Torino confirmed to be a very good side away from home, having won five of their last six games. Now the challenge is to carry this form at the Stadio Olimpico, where they have only won two of the last nine matches.

Having both Romelu Lukaku and Paulo Dybala from the start galvanised Roma who ran riot against a poor Empoli last Sunday. The Argentine scored two (and hit the bar), and with him on the pitch everyone looked more comfortable. The game on Sunday was the first clean sheet of the season for Mourinho’s side, who, this Thursday, will play away in Moldova against Sheriff Tiraspol.

The Portuguese manager will make a few changes for the Europa League match, but the Giallorossi are having to deal with a few injuries as well (Pellegrini, Kumbulla and Smalling). In the last two seasons, Roma have never lost to Torino (three wins to nil, one draw), but I think the hosts are more competitive this campaign.

  • Expert: Daniele Fisichella
  • Selection: Torino or Draw in First Half and Over 1.5 Match Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.93

Varbergs vs Hammarby: Men vs BoIS as rock bottom side set for continued struggles

Sweden, Sweden Allsvenskan, Sunday, September 24th, 15:30 (UK)

Varbergs BoIS were an absolute disgrace last week when they lost 0-7 away to Sirius. It was their last realistic chance of getting back into the survival race but they sank without a trace. It was the type of worrying performance associated with a team who have just given up all hope, belief and respect for themselves in what has been a turgid campaign. Varbergs have been hanging on in the Swedish Allsvenskan for several years now and their miserable 14 points obtained from 23 games means that time has all but run out for them. They have a 20:51 goal differential and conceded at least 3 goals in 6 of their last 7 league fixtures.

That will be music to Hammarby’s ears as they travel here on the back of a 1-3 home loss to Malmo last week. We shouldn’t hold that against them too much though as they were facing one of the strongest teams in Sweden who are now top of the standings. Prior to that loss Hammarby had been in good form winning 6 of their previous 8 Allsvenskan fixtures, in addition to giving a decent account of themselves in the Europa Conference League qualifiers. The Stockholm based outfit are always known for having decent talent at their disposal. Striker Jusuf Erabi and attacking midfielder Viktor Djukanovic are two who stand out right now and they should have more than enough quality to see off this pathetic Varbergs crew.

Taking Hammarby -1 on the Asian handicap looks like a really solid bet. At the very worst, the visitors should win on the nose but it’s more than likely going to be by a two goal margin or more based on Varbergs’ recent struggles. One way traffic is to be expected and it is difficult to see how the home team will bounce back after last week’s disaster.

  • Expert: Steve Wyss
  • Selection: Hammarby -1 Asian Handicap
  • Best Odds: 1.85

Sutton vs MK Dons: Cash in on Eisa

England, League Two, Saturday, September 23rd, 15:00 (UK)

A trip to VBS Community Stadium AKA Gander Green Lane in League Two catches the eye for my best bet this weekend.

Hosts Sutton are winless in seven league games since beating Notts County on the opening weekend, which leaves them propping up the table. The problem for Matt Gray’s side has been keeping opposition attackers quiet.

The Us have conceded 20 goals across their eight games – the most across the Football League – so look towards MK Dons exploiting those defensive deficiencies, especially after Sutton have conceded nine times in 5-3 and 4-1 defeats to Swindon and Accrington Stanley.

Step forward MK Dons striker Mo Eisa. He started the season like a house on fire, netting in each of the Dons’ first four league games. Eisa was benched in their loss at Crewe, while only featuring for 12 minutes against Notts County.

However, Eisa was recalled to the starting eleven last weekend, where he struck in the 26th minute to make the game 1-1. It was his fifth goal on his sixth league start, all of which have come in the first half of matches, so he’s switched on from the first whistle.

Graham Alexander’s Dons have threatened on their travels this season, putting five past Wrexham and three past Colchester, with Eisa on the scoresheet in both. So, take Eisa to profit from some lax Sutton defending.

  • Selection: Mo Eisa to Score Anytime
  • Best Odds: 2.63
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10 (TRACKED BET)
