Sheffield Wednesday vs Barnsley Preview
England, League One Playoff Final, Monday, May 29th, 15:00 (UK)
The dust from that night in Sheffield is only just starting to settle. It seems like the only place to start when considering how to approach a preview article between two of the best sides in the division this season.
At 4-0 down, Sheffield Wednesday shouldn’t have had a chance. They shouldn’t be included here, more a mere afterthought following a season ultimately defined by Darren Moore’s squad’s inability to perform under pressure.
Instead, perhaps it’s a season that will be remembered for the complete opposite. If they can go one step further and lock in Championship football, this will be the year fondly recited where they navigated the playoffs from the ashes. It’ll be the season which ended most remarkably, in front of a sold-out Hillsborough packed to the rafters with semi-expectant, adoring Owls supporters.
It’s far from a sure thing, though. Getting past Barnsley after a mentally and physically emotional 120 minutes plus penalties is some ask. Sheffield Wednesday’s 96 points in the regular season have been well-documented – it’s a total which would have usually won the league, let alone clinch automatic promotion.
Yet, Barnsley only finished ten points shy of Wednesday in fourth. The 86 points were, interestingly, complemented by six from the Owls. Two wins, one at Oakwell (4-2) and one at Hillsborough (0-2), suggests that anyone writing off The Tykes, having been convinced the football gods are in Darren Moores’ favour, may want to think again.
One afternoon will decide the fate of two massive League One football clubs on Monday. Before a ball was kicked in the summer, though, the division’s ante-post odds to win the competition had the pair with a fair distance wedged in between each other. The Owls’ 5.50 favourites tag saw them head the division. Barnsley? Fifth-placed 17.00 shots.
Regardless of who makes it, regardless of who lines up in the Championship next term, these 90 minutes – hopefully, longer – will have absolutely everything.
And that’s without mentioning the fact we’re slap-bang in the middle of a Yorkshire derby.
Sheffield Wednesday vs Barnsley Stats & Facts
- Not one side through to an EFL playoff final this season managed to win the first leg of their playoff semi-final.
- Before their playoff route was decided by Ipswich at the back end of the season, Barnsley won nine matches in a row at Oakwell to propel then into an outside chance of automatic promotion.
- Sheffield Wednesday are the only team in the history of the EFL playoffs to overturn a four-goal deficit.
- The Owls’ 96-point return this season would have won League One in each of the last four seasons.
Sheffield Wednesday vs Barnsley Bet Builder
Unfortunately, the upcoming bet builder will be without any prop markets for the big day. I wanted to get this published as soon as possible for anyone heading to Wembley or getting their bets on early, meaning we miss out on any shots, goal kicks, free kicks markets etc.
However, there’s still a lot to get our teeth into. The bookmakers have Barnsley as 3.40 outsiders, whilst Wednesday arrives at 2.10. There’s a bit of juice in that Tykes price as I don’t see the gulf being that big in 90 minutes. Nevertheless, I’ll skip the 90-minute markets as I won’t be surprised if this goes all the way.
To start, Sheffield Wednesday to clinch promotion at 1.61 feels like an excellent foundation for what we’re after. I wouldn’t take it as a single, in all honesty, but it will work well in a multi-selection builder. I feel The Owls will have a little bit too much throughout the park, and in the end, I expect it to show.
The fairytale of the semi-final comeback feeds into the narrative that this is Sheffield Wednesday’s year despite crumbling under a level of pressure during the season. With the monkey perhaps off of their back and the squad now knowingly capable of producing when it matters, I can get on board with that narrative.
Next up, goals. Or a lack of them. If we see the net bulge early on, this may prove a wildly daft foray into the fixture, but we rarely see hoards of strikes at this stage of the playoffs. You’d have to go back to 2016 for the last time there were four or more goals in this fixture. Interestingly, Barnsley were the eventual 3-1 winners that day against Millwall, following two other high-scoring playoff finals in 2014 and 2015 (2-2 and 4-0).
I foresee 90 minutes that will be nervy for large spells considering what’s on the line – two teams that will place emphasis on not conceding before seeking to carve out opportunities at the other end. With that in mind, let’s settle on the regulation time ending as a draw. Sheffield Wednesday is the better team, in my opinion, but that hasn’t come to fruition in the two meetings this season. Barnsley won both head-t0-heads in the league, and I can see them providing more than enough to take their opponents to extra time here.
A draw gets us to a sizable 7.00.
