Carabao Cup Best Bets: Tuesday, November 8th

Be mindful. Crawley’s 2-0 victory over Fulham in this competition should provide a tentative approach when considering any positions in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Nevertheless, we’ve plucked out four selections that should, hopefully, withstand any plucky underdogs.

Brentford vs Gillingham Preview

Tuesday, November 8th, 19:45 (UK)

In his pre-match press conference, Thomas Frank elaborated on the Carabao Cup and the prospect of silverware for his Brentford side, “For me, we are playing to try and win it. It would be a huge thing for the club. I want to try and win as many games as possible. It’s so difficult to win something in your career, so I will put a very strong team out tomorrow.

“We’ve lost one game at home, and we’ve really tried to create a fortress. That needs to be against Gillingham, Wolves, Manchester City or whoever we play at home. We need to be really difficult to play against; that’s the plan for tomorrow.”

Ivan Toney will start, as will Christian Norgaard, who has faced a spell on the sidelines. That certainly won’t be music to the ears of Neil Harris’ Gillingham. In 20th position in League Two, with just two wins in 16, this is a monumental task for the travelling side. Considering Gillingham’s winless away form (W0/D3/L5), conceding 11 goals in eight League Two matches with two in reply – it could be a long night.

If Brentford poses the type of challenge we’d expect, there will be plenty of running from those in Gillingham colours as they get moved from side to side chasing the ball. Such dominance should tire Gillingham’s legs and, with that, assume more opportunities open up for The Bees in the second half.

As Thomas Frank said, a cup run is huge for Brentford Football Club. They should be safe from relegation. They probably won’t threaten European places. So why not go all out for an assault on a domestic cup competition?

Leicester vs Newport Preview

Tuesday, November 8th, 19:45 (UK)

Don’t expect the strongest eleven from the Premier League hosts, but assume it’ll be a lineup high off the fumes of recent form. Coupling Leicester’s points haul over the last month with them conceding just two goals in seven games, it paints a bleak picture for League Two Newport.

Since the 6-2 thrashing from Spurs, a game they were very much competitive in until the second half ran away from them in a spectacular fashion, The Foxes have been robust at the back. Wout Faes and his aggression when recovering possession and shutting up shop has greatly influenced said backline.

It’ll be a barren run for opponents that Rodgers will want to continue. The Leicester boss will likely have his back four line up reasonably strong, with more fringe players decking out the midfield and forward areas.

Leicester vs Newport Best Bet

Newport scored nine goals in nine games away from home this term. Not the worst return in the world, though it ranks them as the second-lowest scorers in League Two’s top half whilst on their travels. Given their inability to put teams to the sword away from Rodney Parade, it’s difficult to envisage 18th-placed League Two outfit Newport County causing Leicester too much distress.

Instead of win-to-nil, Leicester to grab the opening goal is first on the agenda. With Rodgers intent on keeping a healthy run of form intact, The Foxes should be able to lock in a winning margin of at least two goals (-1). The concern for the proposed selection is if Leicester runs out victors of anything more than a 5+ goal difference.

  • Selection: Leicester Score First, Winning Margin from 2-5 Goals & Leicester 1+ Goal in SH (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.83 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 15/10

Burnley vs Crawley Preview

Tuesday, November 8th, 19:45 (UK)

Tuesday’s hosts are sitting on top of the Championship table after an excellent start to life from Vincent Kompany and Craig Bellamy in the dugout. Burnley has taken to life in the Championship like a duck to water. Despite losing some of their Premier League-established best in the summer, the incomings added to the squad have proved to be Championship level and then some.

A 5-2 defeat in Sheffield will still be ringing in the ears of all of a Clarets persuasion. That would’ve been difficult to take, though one rarely has it all their own way in the Championship. But, in truth, it’s likely to come at the worst time for Crawley Town. Although the Belgian head coach will likely make wholesale changes given the depth of his squad, Kompany will be intent on bouncing back here with a win.

In one week, Crawley were knocked out of the Football League Trophy, fell to a 1-4 defeat against Accrington Stanley at home in the FA Cup. They now face high-flying Burnley in the Carabao Cup and, if the jump from League Two to the Championship is anything to go by, it should be three cup exits in three weeks. Merry Christmas, Crawley fans.

With fatigue playing a part versus Sheffield United, according to Kompany, don’t assume his big guns will be playing here. Instead, those coming back from injury or who need game time will feature. With that in mind, it may be a little disjointed from the hosts, with players not at 100% and a Crawley side happy to sit in and soak up pressure.

Burnley vs Crawley Best Bet

At 1.61, Under four goals can be backed in the match, something to ponder given the potential for a Burnley second-string eleven against a team whose game plan will be proving defensively stubborn. However, with Crawley likely to sit in and welcome pressure for significant periods and the hard work that goes into a match like that against a dominant possession-based style, second-half opportunities shouldn’t be far away.

In a similar thought process to the Brentford vs Gillingham match, adding a Burnley goal after the halftime whistle gets us to 2.30. Not bad

  • Selection: Under 4 Match Goals & Burnley 1+ SH Goal
  • Best Odds: 2.30 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7.5/10

Bournemouth vs Everton Preview

Tuesday, November 8th, 19:45 (UK)

Not for the first time, Frank Lampard needs results to change at Goodison Park. Well, what better time to start than now? The Everton head coach has Bournemouth twice in a row in the calendar, both away from home. This one is a warm-up for their Premier League meeting at the weekend.

The Cherries have lost the last four games in the Premier League despite scoring three against Leeds United last time out and two versus Spurs in the fixture before. On the other hand, Everton saw a run of three losses halted by an impressive 3-0 showing against Crystal Palace. Unfortunately for Lampard, that couldn’t continue with last weekend’s defeat to a reinvigorated Leicester on Merseyside following a 0-0 draw away at Fulham.

Bournemouth vs Everton Best Bet

With Lampard desperate for results and Bournemouth likely prioritising Premier League football, supporters will be confident of The Toffees avoiding defeat. Considering that the goals following Bournemouth around the country, adding over 1.5 goals in the fame harnesses a fairly backable price.

Seven of the last ten Cherries games have overseen two or more goals, whilst Everton have landed the proposed selection in 5/14 Premier League fixtures this term.

  • Selection: Over 1.5 Goals and Everton or Draw
  • Best Odds: 1.80 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 5/10

Odds via William Hill and bet365 as at 10:00 November 8th 2022. Odds may now differ.
