Who Has Scored the Most Goals in a Premier League Season?

Who Has Scored the Most Goals in a Premier League Season?
IMAGO / Colorsport Premier League - Liverpool FC vs. Tottenham Hotspur - Luiz Suarez

There was, for nearly thirty years, a familiar answer to the question of who has scored the most goals in a Premier League season. Two Newcastle United legends in Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, one of whom being the all time top scorer in the Premier League and laying down his best season in Blackburn, answered the question to the tune of 34 goals apiece in the nineties.

That is until Erling Haaland entered the equation and blew a Premier League goal record or two out of the water as a 3.75 Premier League Golden Boot favourite in the summer of 2022.

Below, we discuss a number of players who, if lady luck had overseen proceedings a little differently, could’ve bagged the most goals in a Premier League season themselves.

In this article:

Who Has Scored The Most Premier League Goals In A Season? Erling Haaland, That’s Who

Erling Haaland – 36 goals – 2022/23

Look, when the majority of UK bookmakers start providing markets in pre-season titled ‘ Top Premier League Goalscorer Without Erling Haaland’, then you can be sure that Manchester City’s freakish marksman is truly in a league of his own. Going off at odds-on prices of around 1.72 (top Premier League goalscorer) before a ball was kicked ahead of 2023/24, some would argue that the 58.14% implied probability for Erling Haaland to top the rankings is perhaps still not correctly reflective of how dominant he was and will likely be moving forward.

The Erling Haaland stats dug up after each and every goal highlight just how ruthless he has become since switching from Borussia Dortmund and the Bundesliga. In the season where he netted the most goals in a Premier League season ever (2022/23), Erling Haaland scored 36 goals in 35 matches en route to both a Premier League goal record and the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022/23, two of which he started on the substitute’s bench. That’s 1.09 goals per start (33) in his record-breaking, head-turning debut campaign.

The underlying metrics suggest Haaland was clinical, too. The 36 goals dwarfed his 28.4xG, as the Norwegian outperformed his expected goals total by +7.6 G-xG (Goals minus Expected Goals). Only Harry Kane’s +8.5 (30 goals from 21.5xG) trumped the City man.

Erling Haaland began the season as 3.75 favourite for the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022. There were question marks around his fitness and how he’d adapt in a Pep Guardiola side where his focus may need to veer away from goal-scoring and settle on linking play with his back to goal. Those concerns were swiftly put to bed.

The Premier League All Time Top Scorer Ladies and Gents; Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer – 34 goals – 1994/95

It’s the man with the Premier League goal record. Alan Shearer, regularly pictured with his arm aloft in black and white and also in shades of Rovers blue, makes an appearance here to absolutely no one’s amazement.

It was Blackburn Rovers where Shearer would lock in his most goals scored in a Premier League season. The 34 strikes in 42 outings earned him the Premier League Golden Boot, as you could imagine, although his main achievement came as a team. Rovers would go on to win their first title since 1914.

Alan Shearer features in the top ten (table above) on three occasions for the most goals scored in a Premier League season. The now-MOTD pundit entered the 30 Club on three different occasions, with his 34 Rovers goals in 1994/95 only recently pipped by Erling Haaland 28 years later.

It must be noted that Alan Shearer’s 34 goals came in the final season when the Premier League had 22 teams competing. Therefore, his 34 strikes came from 42 games, with Shearer starting all 42 – Mr. Dependable.

This particular Premier League goal record was good while it lasted, Alan. Now you’ll just have to put up with being the Premier League all time top scorer. Not bad, I suppose.

Andy Cole Scores Goals: Prolific at several clubs, edging him into the conversation of Premier League all time top scorers

Andy Cole – 34 goals – 1993/94

Andy Cole’s rip-roaring 1993/94 season was his debut campaign in the top flight, and one which saw him score the most Premier League goals in a season. Only Erling Haaland (36) and Kevin Phillips (30) at the turn of the millennium in 1999/00 join Cole in the 30 Club in his first-ever season in the Premier League.

The goal tally of 34 goals and an accompanying assist total of 13 were league-leading in both categories. Cole had catapulted Newcastle United to the top flight in the season before, and after such an impressive stint in the subsequent 1993/94 season, Manchester United would move for the Englishman’s signature in January 1995.

Five-time Premier League-winner Cole would run out for 12 clubs in England, each of which was blessed by his goal-scoring prowess on many occasions – Blackburn, Newcastle and Manchester United more so than most.

He was a man in demand back then and a striker right amongst the leading Premier League all time scorers.

A 66/1 Mo Salah Ruling Merseyside: Liverpool’s Egyptian King fires his most goals in a Premier League season

Mo Salah – 32 goals -2017/18

Yes, you read that right; Mo Salah’s most goals in a Premier League season came whilst he was best priced at 67.00 (Skybet) to top the scoring charts. It was a time when Mo Salah wouldn’t get a mention in the Premier League Golden Boot betting previews that swamped the internet in the summer.

Instead, Chicarito (51.00) of West Ham edged into people’s thinking as Salaven Bilic’s leading striker, with Christan Benteke (51.00) a potential punt for a forward-thinking Frank De Boer at Crystal Palace.

It was Salah’s debut season with The Reds, and like Erling Haaland in 2022/23, he was destructive, wowing crowds in Merseyside and further afield in the UK.

The former Roma winger scored 32 goals that season, and what a season it was. Since that fruitful campaign, Mo Salah is yet to venture into the 30 Club again, managing 22, 19, 22, 23 and 19.

Another Scouse Hero: Luis Suarez’s suspension likely deciding fate of Premier League goal record

Luis Suarez – 31 goals – 2013/14

In the season following Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge’s January arrivals, it was Luis Suarez who was set to benefit so greatly from shrewd, wintery acquisitions.

Luis Suarez was ruled out until late September following an infamous bite on Branislav Ivanovic, yet he still grappled his way to 31 goals. That is sublime; 31 goals in 33 appearances, to be precise.

Considering the suspension, the troubled but brilliant Uruguayan was nowhere to be seen in the bookmaker’s considerations for the Premier League Golden Boot that year. Instead, the likes of Alvaro Negredo and Roberto Soldado quenched the thirst of unsuspecting punters.

Imagine Luis Suarez in this red-hot form with 38 games at his disposal. He may well have notched the most Premier League goals in a season.

Who won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022?

The Premier League Golden Boot in 2022 went to Erling Haaland, whose stats continue to bewilder. Manchester City’s main man plundered 36 goals in 38 matches, snatching the Premier League goal record of scoring the most goals in a Premier League season. Haaland fended off Harry Kane’s 30 goals in Spurs colours and Brentford’s Ivan Toney (20) quite comfortably in the end.
