To Make The England Euros Squad: Short Odds with One Foot On The Plane
Southgate has a selection of dilemmas as he attempts to whittle down an impressive pool of players. After analysing the bookmaker’s odds, you’ll see some intriguing predictions from the bookies.
Goalkeepers
In goal, Jordan Pickford seems a shoo-in to retain his place as the number one, with prices of 1.08 for the Everton shot-stopper to make the plane. With Aaron Ramsdale dropped as Arsenal keeper, question marks remain on whether there’s space for him in the Three Lions squad.
However, the bookies seem adamant that the 25-year-old will keep his place. In terms of the third-choice goalkeeper, Nick Pope and Sam Johnstone are in the running for the third slot. The bookies believe Sam Johnstone will be on the plane, pricing the Palace number one at 1.33.
Defenders
Defensively, Southgate is likely to rely on tried and tested players such as John Stones, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s versatility and ability to play in midfield has potentially moved him up in the pecking order, with Reece James’ price of 1.50 being dependent on whether the Chelsea right-back can stay fit.
The same can be said for his Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell, who has struggled with injuries in recent years. Mark Guehi and Lewis Dunk have been selected in the recent squad, with the Crystal Palace man slightly ahead in the pecking order. With injury problems for Shaw and Chilwell, Levi Colwill’s ability to play left back and centre back has made him likely to be selected ahead of Fikayo Tomori.
Midfielders
Outside of Real Madrid star man Jude Bellingham and £105 million man Declan Rice, there is uncertainty over what other midfielders will be selected. After a fine start to the season for Tottenham Hotspur, James Maddison looks to have forced himself into the reckoning. Despite limited game time for Manchester City, Kalvin Phillips is a player on whom Southgate regularly relies.
Jordan Henderson’s controversial move to Saudi Arabia has been met with significant criticism from the English public, with the 33-year-old booed off the pitch against Australia. However, he is expected to retain his spot.
Forwards
Up front, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Manchester City duo Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford will all be in the squad, barring injuries. Players such as Ebe Eze, Raheem Sterling, and Jarrod Bowen hope to force themselves back into the reckoning but face stiff competition from Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer, who could be shock inclusions after fine club form.
With Harry Kane as the leading starter, the question is, who will be Harry Kane’s understudy- Callum Wilson, Ollie Watkins, or both?
Does Ollie Watkins or Callum Wilson make the England Euros Squad?
The case of the Harry Kane understudy has been a hot debate all season. Many are split on who deserves the spot on the plane. Both Callum Wilson and Ollie Watkins edge towards a double-figure goal haul in the Premier League again this season. However, with football becoming increasingly data-driven, let’s look at some underlying numbers from last season.
Last term, Callum Wilson scored 18 goals and registered five assists from just 21 starts and ten sub appearances. Ollie Watkins scored 15 and assisted six in 38 starts. While Watkins is undoubtedly Aston Villa’s first-choice striker, Wilson has to rotate with the supremely talented Alexander Isak. In terms of goals per90, Wilson scored every 108 minutes, while Watkins scored every 226.35 minutes. The pair were neck and neck for xG, with the Newcastle forward recording 16.54, compared to the Aston Villa’s forward 16.59.
Nevertheless, due to the disparity in minutes, Wilson amassed 0.85xG per90, compared to Watkins’ 0.49xG. Both were volume shooters, with Wilson recording 3.35 shots per90, overshadowing Watkins’ 2.48.
So, with Wilson scoring more and with better underlying data, the 31-year-old may get the nod. Yet, Watkins has been lauded for his all-round game, scoring and assisting regularly. His link-up play and ability to stretch defences could have him as favourite as Kane’s understudy as ‘Plan B’.

Who Won’t Make The England Squad for the Euros?
We’ve discussed the shoo-ins to make the England Euros squad. However, with the need to choose a plump cohort of players ahead of the competition, there could be value for a few wildcards. Let’s look at a selection of players who might fancy their chances of a late call-up, as well as those who have fallen out of favour.
Despite being imperative in an impressive Arsenal defence and his ability to play multiple positions, Ben White will likely miss out due to a rumoured disagreement with assistant manager Steve Holland. Jadon Sancho’s fall from grace is represented in his price. Despite being a staple in previous England squads, Raheem Sterling could find himself missing out, just as he did against Australia and Italy. Elsewhere, Fikayo Tomori has been included in the last few squads but was cut from the national side for the qualifier against Italy and has found his game time limited.
Jarrod Bowen, Anthony Gordon, and Cole Palmer have impressed this season and may fancy their chances of forcing themselves into the squad in attack. The latter, former Manchester City and current Chelsea man, was a late inclusion in Southgate’s recent England squad. Rico Lewis, his former City teammate, and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, both join the late call-up party.
Jarrad Branthwaite has been one of the best-performing centre-backs in the Premier League this season, and Southgate may be tempted to take a punt on the Everton centre-back as a fifth choice. Lewis Hall made headlines for his goal in Newcastle’s impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and might fancy his chances of a surprise inclusion.
Obviously, Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell are ahead of him in the pecking area, as well as Levi Colwill and Kieran Trippier, who have shown they can fill in at left-back. However, with Shaw and Chilwell suffering many injuries over the year, Hall could force himself into the reckoning if he manages to get regular minutes for Newcastle. He has previously been invited to first-team training, so he is obviously a player on Gareth Southgate’s radar.
