Vasco vs Palmeiras Prediction 1: Goals galore
Brazil, Brazil Serie A, Sunday, September 22nd, 20:00 (UK)
While Palmeiras continue to keep pushing Botafogo in search of back-to-back titles, Vasco continue to perform above expectations in 8th spot.
With no Copa Libertadores or Copa do Brasil titles to contend for, Abel Ferreira’s sole focus is on keeping his league title – and they are hot on the heels of Artur Jorge’s side.
Unbeaten in five, Palmeiras have two 5-0 victories within this mini-run of good form. They are turning the screw at just the right time.
Vasco, however, are performing miracles this season. Since their 6-1 defeat against Flamengo, they have gone 10 unbeaten at home, winning seven of those matches. They’ve also just come away from the Maracana with a 1-1 draw thanks to Philippe Coutinho’s late equaliser.
Last season these two sides shared a 2-2 draw and it’ll be no surprise to see a repeat of that. Both are fighting for different achievements, and this is easily the fixture of the weekend in Brazil.

Vasco vs Palmeiras Prediction 2: Back boy wonder
Estevao continues to amaze everyone. The 17-year-old has nine goals and seven assists in just 22 league appearances for Palmeiras. He’s averaged just over 60 minutes per game, and he’s now chasing the golden boot in his first season in senior football.
The teenage superstar has scored four goals in his last three matches for Palmerias, either side of his first national team call-up. It’s safe to say he’s loving his football at the moment and everyone is loving watching him, too.
So unpredictable on the right wing, defenders don’t know if he’s cutting inside or skinning the full-back around the outside before driving into the box. No one can handle him, and Vasco will struggle, too.
Estevao has all the ingredients to become Brazil’s next star, but for now, let’s just enjoy what he’s doing in Brazil (scoring goals) and profit from his ludicrously big prices.
- Vasco vs Palmeiras Prediction 2: Estevão to score anytime
- Best Odds: 4.0
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 6/10
Vasco vs Palmeiras Prediction 3: Frantic football
Palmeiras may be coming into their own but Vasco, as mentioned, have been phenomenal at home and it would be harsh to overlook them at their current price.
They’ve won their last four matches on home soil and head into this tie having scored late to pinch a point at arch-rivals Flamengo. Confidence within the camp is high.
Vasco came from behind to beat Athletico PR in the Copa do Brasil with two late goals, having produced the exact same scenario three days earlier in the league.
Prior to that, Vasco swept aside both Fluminense and Atletico GO, and while they aren’t on the same level as Palmeiras, Ferreira’s away form isn’t anything to shout about.
Having won just one of their last five, there’s work to do on the road if they want to win the title. Over 90 minutes, they should have the edge against Vasco, but for the hosts to win just one half at 2.50, the price is very appealing.
- Vasco vs Palmeiras Prediction 3: Vasco to win either half
- Best Odds: 2.50
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 6/10

Vasco vs Palmeiras Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups: Coutinho to start?
Having scored the late equaliser against Flamengo, Coutinho could be rewarded with a start against Palmeiras alongside Dimitri Payet on the left-hand side. Both have adapted to Brazil well since their moves, and have helped the youngsters bed in.
One youngster that doesn’t need any bedding in is Estevao. A player we’ll be talking about for the next decade or so, Palmerias’ attacker is in red hot form and is looking to score in his fourth consecutive match.
Vasco possible starting lineup:
Jardim; Piton, Leo, Maicon, Henrique, Payet, Sforza, Moura, David, Vegetti, Coutinho
Palmeiras possible starting lineup:
Weverton; Rocha, Gomez, Murilo, Vanderlan, Mauricio, Rios, Moreno, Estevao, Lopez, Anderson
Match Stats
- The reverse fixture between these two sides last season finished 2-2.
- Estevao has scored four goals in his last three matches.
- Vasco are unbeaten at home in 10 (W7 D3).
