Friday Tennis Best Bet: WTA 125K Buenos Aires, Panna Udvardy vs Sara Errani
Panna Udvardy vs Sara Errani Best Bet: Friday, November 18th
Early missed chances for Maximilian Marterer came back to bite him, as he lost a tight first set, only to disappear in the second. Great opportunity squandered for the German in Helsinki.
Onto Friday, where we’re back to the WTA 125K event in Buenos Aires, where we’ll take a look at the matchup between Panna Udvardy and Sara Errani.

It was a tumultuous start to the 2022 season for Udvardy, as she looked to make the jump to the WTA Tour, and it didn’t go well.
After winning over 60 matches on clay at lower-level events in 2021, the Hungarian had earned the ability to enter events at the top level of the sport, but the higher quality of competition, combined with the fact that the season begins on hard courts (a surface she’s not nearly as effective on) saw her lose her first seven matches of the season, spanning a few months.
That poor form bled into her clay season as well, but as she’s dropped back down to the ITF Tour, she’s had far more success in recent times.
The end of July and beginning of August saw her win a title and make a final (losing to WTA player Ana Bogdan in three sets) in back-to-back events on the dirt and she made another pair of finals on hard courts since the start of October as well. Amazing what confidence and good form can do for a player.
This week in Buenos Aires, she’s shown no signs of slowing down, beating Marcela Zacarias with ease and getting past talented American collegiate player Emma Navarro in three.
Taking on Errani, Udvardy has a decent profile to trouble the veteran grinding, defensive Italian.
Errani’s wins usually come against players she can wait out unforced errors against, and find holds of serve because of that. Against players with any kind of consistency, she can find herself in trouble, simply because almost every player on tour is going to have more power and a better serve than she does.
Udvardy fits the bill well of a player that should succeed against Errani. Clay is her favourite surface, she has a half-decent serve and the ability to dictate from the baseline with her groundstrokes, and she plays with enough consistency to ensure Errani can’t just wait for her to lose the match.
Panna Udvardy vs Sara Errani Best Bet
With the 24-year-old back in form and playing at a level she’s shown she can dominate, this price is a bit too close for me. Errani has beaten an incredibly erratic player in Clara Burel this week, and then Kateryna Baindl, who was coming off a long week and final match in Colina (her opponent in that final, Mayar Sherif, actually withdrew from this event prior to the first round after having played that physical match).
I don’t see anything in those two wins that is of particular concern and think Udvardy should be a much larger favourite in this spot.
