It was a shockingly successful week for the 22-year-old Carle last week on home soil, as she reached the semifinals of the 125K in Buenos Aires. The most impressive part of the run, was the fact she was the betting underdog in each of her three wins, and again in the semis, where she pushed the eventual champion, Panna Udvardy, to three sets.
It’s a tough task for her in the opening round in Montevideo, however, as she’ll look to back up a long week with yet another upset, as she takes on one of the more talented young players in the world in Brenda Fruhvirtova.
The Czech has won 50 matches at the lower levels on clay so far this season, using incredible consistency, a backhand that is tour-ready now and the ability to consistently put groundstrokes back deep into the court. It’s a perfect recipe at the lower levels and on clay, where most players don’t possess much power and can’t blow her off the court.
She’s lost her last two matches during this South American swing, but one was a very close loss to a very strong clay courter in Mayar Sherif (who was able to use her bigger serve and forehand enough to sneak past her).
Considering she’s thrived against other players who play a similar game style to hers, the matchup against Carle, coming off a long week, appears to be a great spot for Fruhvirtova to get back to winning ways.

We’ve seen the market react to recent form, with the -4 games market opening up at 1.71 odds. While form can be important in tennis, this exact matchup two weeks ago would’ve seen a games handicap of -5 games and Fruhvirtova’s odds to win under 1.25.
To me, that’s a bit too much of an adjustment, and I’m happy to back the favourite here, though with potential fatigue issues for the youngster late into the season, I’m content with going a little smaller staking-wise.
