Wednesday Tennis Best Bet: ATP Cincinnati, Cameron Norrie vs Andy Murray

Cameron Norrie vs Andy Murray Best Bet: Wednesday, August 17th
Lovely performance on Tuesday from the young American Ben Shelton, who certainly has a bright future in the sport. Luckily, as expected, Lorenzo Sonego was able to put forth a strong performance on serve to keep it close and send the match over 22.5 games.
For Wednesday’s matchup, we’ll break down the second-round encounter between two Brits, as Cameron Norrie takes on Andy Murray for a spot in the final 16.

In what many will consider a big event in the world of tennis, this one has “straightforward affair” written all over it.
Whether you look at Murray’s decline, or the matchup against an ultra-solid Norrie, it’s tough to carve out a path to victory for one of the titans of the modern game.
Statistically, the younger Norrie has an elo rating nearly 140 points higher on hard courts and has a hold plus break percentage that is approximately nine points higher on hard courts this season than his veteran counterpart’s. He also lands more first serves and has won more points behind his serve and on return this season than Murray.
When it comes to matchup, he’s far more durable physically and is an absolute wall from the baseline. Without any major weapons to hit through Norrie, Murray is going to find it hard to generate points without Norrie errors.
Norrie’s ability to generate angles and pull opponents off the court should also trouble Murray, who’s shown a propensity to tire in recent weeks and who’s movement isn’t what it used to be.

With Murray’s form also being of concern, for me, this spread is off by at least a game to a game and a half. When this handicap gets under four games, it is a must-play for me.
Considering Murray hasn’t beaten anyone of consequence since Nick Kyrgios in Stuttgart over two months ago, I’m not sure why the market feels this one isn’t worthy of being priced as a straight sets, routine win for Norrie.
Beating James Duckworth in four sets, Sam Querrey in the year 2022, Max Purcell in three sets and barely getting by Stan Wawrinka in three in 2022 is not a collection of impressive wins by any means.
I’ll be backing Norrie to get this one done, and cover the handicap while doing so.
