Just because a few of my larger stakes bets went down in flames last week doesn’t mean I’m going to shy away from taking advantage of what my numbers deem to be poor prices.
This is one such case, as Wang has the perfect matchup against a good Bronzetti, but one that can’t hit through Wang and I don’t think has nearly as much to her game. That’s without even mentioning the fact that while the Italian has improved on hard courts, she’s still nowhere near as natural or comfortable on the surface as her counterpart in this match.
Read on for more expert insights.
Yafan Wang Recent Form
The 29-year-old has quietly been one of the more in-form players on the women’s circuit since last year and has steadily risen to be the world No. 70.
This season saw her rebound from a relatively slow start by reaching the third round of the Australian Open (lost to the eventual finalist Qinwen Zheng and she pushed her to a third set super tiebreak) and then made a semifinal run in Hua Hin, once again losing to a countrywoman.
Those last two losses were both to strong players, whether you measure by ranking or by ability on the given courts.
She’s now taken a nice little break to recharge and should actually be considered one of the players that could surprise this week.
She doesn’t have the most powerful game out there, but her ability to hit the forehand with strong angles when going crosscourt or consistently down the line without hitting unforced errors always keeps her opponents on their toes, she defends very well and rarely misses.
Coming up against a player without a lot of power themselves, she should be well-positioned to use her more natural hard-court game, as well as more precise shotmaking to make it through to the second round on Monday.
Lucia Bronzetti Recent Form
For a while in 2023, it felt like I was the only person beating the drum that Bronzetti was going to be a better player on hard courts than I think many people gave her credit for.
Her rally tolerance and defensive capabilities play across surfaces and her forehand has a bit of bite to it. She’s also not afraid to get more aggressive when opportunities present themselves on that wing either. Now, the finishing power isn’t the best, but I think she deserves credit for adapting her game in the last few seasons.
Now, with that said, I don’t love her when it comes to betting matches against other players who can match her solidity. It becomes much tougher to hit through players who don’t commit errors and move well.
Further, unlike with power players where she can exploit the potential lack of movement for many of them, or redirect the pace and use their power against them, she’ll have to generate her own offence in this one, and that’s where I think she can get herself in trouble.
I think this season has been tough for her, with her ranking now putting her into some of the bigger events on tour. She’s really struggled for wins, with her only victories coming against lesser competition or formerly very good players returning from a prolonged absence.
Yafan Wang vs Lucia Bronzetti H2H – Stat of the Match
Bronzetti won the lone matchup between them. A few caveats though. First, that match was three years ago. Second, it was on clay – which is much more favourable for the Italian. Finally, she won that from a set down and needed a comeback in an environment much more favourable for her.
With Wang now in much better form and the surface switching to one she’s more comfortable with, I think she should be a much larger favourite than she already is.
The elo ratings have her just under 70 points better when it comes to the blended ratings as well.
