US Open TOP HALF Expert Tip: Tommy Paul a Dark Horse

The top half of the men’s draw is absolutely loaded. Not only are there plenty of really talented players, but most of those that specialise and succeed most on hard courts can be found here.

Alcaraz is the obvious favourite to emerge from this half, but there are plenty of obstacles along the way.

Considering Alcaraz is in that first quarter, I’m not too keen on placing any wagers on the overall futures market from this half. The fact that there are so many good players also puts me off the tournament-long wagers from this part of the bracket.

What does intrigue me, however, is the possibility of finding a decent player to back to win the second quarter. See, that wager can be cashed without having to back anyone to beat Alcaraz.

This section has Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, but I think we can attack this part of the draw more than some may realise.

Medvedev – while an elite hard courter on the whole – has been in relatively poor form entering this fortnight. His serve-and-push style has been solved by a few guys in the last few big events and I’m going to avoid backing him here.

The player I’d look to back once the quarter prices come out (that will happen once qualifying is complete on Friday) is Alex de Minaur.

The Aussie has been in fine form this summer, likes the somewhat quick courts and doesn’t mind the heat and humidity.

He also has a lovely path to the fourth round, and with Medvedev and Rublev both in the quarter, he’s likely to have a desirable price attached to his name.

US Open BOTTOM HALF Expert Tip: Novak Djokovic Value at No.1 Spot

In the bottom half of the draw, I have two bets on the overall tournament I don’t mind placing.

For starters, I don’t mind backing Novak Djokovic to win the U.S. Open. Even as the favourite. Why? His draw is as nice as they come for a top-2 seed, he’s having an absolutely incredible season and his price of 2.24 implies he only wins this tournament 44.5% of the time.

With the better draw to the title, I have him winning this event at least half the time. Throw in the fact that Alcaraz may not even be the man standing on the other side of the net since his half is much tougher and that price becomes even more appealing.

The other price I like here is Tommy Paul. At 150/1, the American certainly provides value. He’s had a terrific summer, losing only to strong players, beating Alcaraz once and nearly doing it again, and his game is well suited to hard courts. Throw in a home crowd and I’m loving this number.

Once the qualifiers are placed, I also wouldn’t mind a stab at him to win the 3rd quarter of the draw.
