For our selection from Tuesday’s matches on offer across the world on the Challenger circuit, it’s the one featuring Alexander Shevchenko and Manuel Guinard that sticks out for me.

It’s been a tough run for Guinard over the course of the last several months. In fact, the Frenchman has been mired in a terrible slump that has seen him go 2-9 in ATP events since reaching the Lyon Challenger semifinals in early June.
The two wins? A third set tiebreak victory he eked out against Julian Lenz as a massive favourite, and a successful match against Denis Yevseyev, who many books no longer price up.
It’s been a brutal run for the tall Frenchman, who plays with little margin for error to his game and hasn’t been able to make nearly enough balls to stay competitive with the rest of the tour.
As for Shevchenko, the Russian took down one Challenger and reached the semis of another in June, but has struggled to string wins together since. The difference? The poor form hasn’t been nearly as pronounced, and his losses of late have come against players like Dominic Thiem or in three sets to Federico Coria and Jozef Kovalik. Needless to say, those are much sterner tests on clay than Guinard.
The 21-year-old is also coached by Gunter Bresnik and his game has really progressed this season. We’ve seen more willingness to play attacking tennis from the forehand wing and he can make a lot of balls and extend rallies – something that should match up well against a player struggling to find the court.

For me, whether it’s talent, matchup or form, Shevchenko is simply the much better player on a clay court.
While he is the favourite, I think the 2.5-game handicap is a rather generous one against Guinard in this position, and it’s one I’m more than willing to back.
