An uninspiring performance from Dalma Galfi on Monday got our selections for the week from the women’s events off to a poor start.
Onto Tuesday, where we’ll once again preview a match from the WTA 125K event in Budapest, Hungary. It’s another first-round encounter, and once again, we’ll have a Hungarian playing on home soil as Anna Bondar takes on Elisabetta Cocciaretto for a spot in the second round.

This is certainly one of the more interesting matchups of the opening round – especially considering this is a 125K event. At this level, it’s rare to see two players in the top 100 squaring off so early on in the draw.
With both being competent players on the surface, it has the potential to be a close affair. While Cocciaretto does have the better record on clay of the two, it’s still surprising to me to see her priced up as a solid favourite. With most of the market giving her a 60-65% chance to emerge victorious, I think we’re seeing a decent opportunity to back Bondar here.
Bondar has a stronger serve of the two, and plays solid, well-rounded baseline tennis. She’s consistent, prefers the clay and is more likely to be able to dictate points. While her lack of form is somewhat concerning, it’s worth noting that while she had a disappointing performance last week in the second round in Bucharest, Cocciaretto had an equally disappointing loss at the same event.
Cocciaretto is certainly the player that frustrates less. She doesn’t commit nearly as many errors and gets more out of her talent. That said, Bondar is still the more talented of the two on clay courts for my money and with the home crowd there to provide motivation, she’s certainly in with a chance to pull off what the market would deem an upset.

This is certainly far from a “banker” or “lock” of a play. It’s important to note that this is all about finding discrepancies in the pricing and for me, Bondar deserves to be in the 2.00 to 2.10 range odds-wise more so than up at the 2.40 odds we have available.
As a result, I’m happy to make a small wager on her to advance to the second round in this one.
