Quentin Halys vs Guido Pella Best Bet: Tuesday, May 30th

Hamad Medjedovic looked absolutely awful and nervy from the get-go, getting embarrassed by a poor clay courter in 4 sets.

For Tuesday, we’ll look to see if we can finally get a few wins in a row going on these articles, as we look at the first-round matchup between Quentin Halys and Guido Pella from the French Open.

What may look like a surface mismatch on paper between the big-serving Halys and more spin-oriented and defensive Pella isn’t nearly as pronounced as one may think.

Halys has made a concerted effort in the last few years to become a better player on the red clay, and those improvements, along with his powerful game, have made him much more dangerous in these types of matchups.

This season, the 26-year-old has lost to Roberto Bautista Agut, Casper Ruud, Lorenzo Sonego and Arthur Fils. The first three are established players on tour and the fourth is one of the game’s most promising young prospects, who just won his maiden title at 18 years old last week.

Not one of those four losses was in straight sets and three of the four were either 5-7 or 6-7 in the third set.

Now he takes on Pella, who has been a shell of himself for quite some time. He’s had serious injury issues that have kept him out and he hasn’t been able to get a rhythm and enough matches in to regain his old form, and to make matters worse, he has a foot condition he’ll have to deal with for the rest of his playing days.

Halys has beaten players of his current level consistently this season across surfaces, and he’ll also be the more likely player to apply pressure on the return of serve – particularly important if you’re looking to back a favourite on the handicap.

I think the market has made adjustments to Pella’s new normal level. Halys as a 4.5-game favourite would seem reasonable if just factoring in Pella’s decline.

I’m not sure they’re figuring in Halys’ marked improvement on the surface, or the fact that in a best-of-five format, Pella is much more likely to fade physically and drop a lopsided set later on in the match.

The Argentine has only played one best-of-five set match since the summer of 2021, losing in straight sets to fellow clay courter Francisco Cerundolo this past January.

  • Selection: Halys -4.5 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.87 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 4/10
  • Odds as at 2:00 am UK Time on May 30th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
