It was Popyrin who was responsible for dismissing Auger Aliassime in the opening round of play, doing so in straight sets as a massive underdog (he was priced over 6.00 in the markets).
Equipped with a monster serve and forehand combination and being decent at covering the court, Popyrin has always had a lot of promise to his game – especially on quicker courts.
The issue was an absolutely abysmal 2022 season, where he simply couldn’t keep the ball in the court and it bled into his return game, which made matters worse.
He’s looked absolutely rejuvenated on home soil this week, however, with the aforementioned win over Auger Aliassime, as well as a pair of qualifying victories against a pair of men from China who were sensational at the Challenger Tour level in the last few months of 2022.
His serve is clicking, and that alone makes him a threat to win any match he plays, but his forehand isn’t just keeping players on their heels, but he’s moved it around the court with a level of accuracy and consistency he hasn’t managed to before.
His opponent – American Marcos Giron – also enjoys playing on quicker courts, where his game plays up and his higher tennis IQ allows him to construct points and hold serve more often than you’d think for someone with his game.
That said, he simply doesn’t possess the raw power of Popyrin, and is far more likely to see his service games face some pressure in this matchup.

While the over wouldn’t be a terrible look here, I’m not keen on how high the number is. So I’ve gone with Popyrin to win, as I believe he is the far more likely winner, and should be priced closer to the 1.61-1.66 range, rather than the 1.80-1.90 range we’re currently seeing in the betting markets.
