Hard not to like Jarry here who has proven himself as an extremely tough player to beat across surfaces over the course of the last year. He hits such a heavy ball, has incredible power and is one of the few players that can find consistent cheap points behind his first serve, even in slower conditions.
I’m not sure why the market continues to bet on Etcheverry, who simply hasn’t impressed me at all to open the season, but it’s not like Jarry didn’t just put in a great performance to beat another player with a very aggressive game who is capable of generating power to hit through clay last round. Yes, that match was very long, but Jarry played his second round match on Wednesday and that day off alleviates any fatigue concerns that may come with a lengthy match.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry Recent Form
The form of the Argentinian is a bit of a two-sided coin. On one hand, he’s been incredible this week. Granted, he’s beaten Daniel Elahi Galan and Roberto Carballles Baena – neither near the level of Jarry – but it’s been good to see from him nonetheless.
Why is that? Because his play prior to this week had been pretty poor. In Cordoba he seemed lost with regards to winning points against his countryman and pusher Federico Coria, while he also lost on home soil and clay against Timofei Skatov in Davis Cup action.
During the Australian summer, he had a few tight losses to talented players and picked up two wins against ageing veterans in Melbourne, but wasn’t all that convincing either.
There’s no doubting his talent. Unlike some of his compatriots that have found form with no weapons, he can hit through the forehand and hits a heavy ball as well. He can also move and cover the court well.
His problems are point construction and figuring out how to win points when he gets into extended rallies and can’t just hit through his opposition, as well as his rally tolerance, where he can lose the plot from time to time.
Nicolas Jarry Recent Form
Jarry’s form hasn’t been the greatest either (potentially a reason people are looking to oppose him in the market).
That said, he did look really strong in his win against Stan Wawrinka, who played one heck of a match with the crowd at his back and still couldn’t get past the towering Jarry.
He hasn’t played much the last few weeks after a heartbreaking first round loss in five sets to an inspired Flavio Cobolli at the Australian Open.
If there’s anyone that combines the ability to hit through clay with the comfort and confidence on the surface, it’s the Chilean, who lost early here last year, but fared very well in Rio de Janeiro (made the final and was so close to beating Carlos Alcaraz) and Santiago (won the title).
I’m going to back him against almost anyone in these fields if you offer me odds in the 2.25 region.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Nicolas Jarry H2H – Stat of the Match
I’m going to go ahead and guess that a lot of this pricing has to do with the fact that Etcheverry is 3-1 against Jarry and all four meetings have come on clay.
Now, a lot of those have come at altitude, many were nail biters and won by the slimmest of margins, two of them were before Jarry had really taken the strides he has, and the Chilean did take the last meeting in Santiago.
Throw in questionable form prior to this week from Etcheverry, and I’m fine backing this to be another relatively close match where I get the more naturally powerful player and the
