Tomas Machac vs Laslo Djere BNP Paribas Nordic Open Expert Tip: Back Red Hot Machac to Win Once More

Tomas Machac vs Laslo Djere BNP Paribas Nordic Open Expert Tip: Back Red Hot Machac to Win Once More
IMAGO / ZUMA Wire Laslo Djere of Serbia in action against Jiri Lehecka of Czech Republic during the Davis Cup 2023.

Tomas Machac vs Laslo Djere (BNP Paribas Open): Friday, October 20th

Lovely stuff from Maximilian Marterer on Thursday, who covered each of the handicaps, including the higher odds alternate handicaps, despite blowing his break lead in the second. Truth be told, that match never really seemed close, as the German dominated on the court and statistically.

For Friday, we’ll head to the BNP Paribas Open in Stockholm, Sweden for our ATP preview and look at Tomas Machac vs Laslo Djere.

Tomas Machac vs Laslo Djere Expert Tip

Whether it’s the surface, offensive advantage or the recent form, I’m not sure how the market has priced this one up as a close match.

I actually rate Djere on hard courts somewhat now, as he has made marked improvements to his game on quicker courts.

That said, I’m not close to believing he’s all of a sudden a hard courter that can deal with the big hitting and aggressive play of someone like Machac on an indoor hard court – even if the courts are only medium paced in terms of speed.

With the volatility in Machac’s game, I’ll refrain from going too large on this wager, but I will still go with a fair-sized wager.

  • Expert Tip: Machac to win at 1.73 with Bet365 (available at 1.79 with Pinnacle), using 4/10 stakes.

Odds as at 3:00 am UK Time on October 20th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Tomas Machac Recent Form

If you want to talk about one of the hottest players on tour right now, that conversation has to include the 23-year-old Czech.

Despite losing in qualifying at this tournament, he’s still 16-2 in his last 18 professional matches (with two Davis Cup wins in that span as well).

He’s done a lot of that work indoors as well, with titles in Orleans and Mouilleron-le-Captif, beating some strong competition along the way.

Even in Stockholm, his loss came in a tight three setter to one of tennis’ most promising young guns and he proceeded to dominate Stan Wawrinka in the second round as an underdog.

His ball striking is incredible and he isn’t one dimensional in any sense.

The primary liability for him is how erratic he can be and his inability to find a second gear and play with more margin for error when he does lose rhythm.

On a hard court in this form, however, I’ll take him at this price against a strong player, but one that prefers clay courts and doesn’t have the biggest game to take advantage of these conditions.

Laslo Djere Recent Form

I’ve actually been impressed with Djere’s improvements on hard courts in the last few years. The serve is more potent and he certainly is a bit more aggressive in his approach.

That doesn’t mean that I think he’s become a strong player on the surface though. He still has a game more suited for clay and can be outhit on hard courts by more powerful players.

He’s won two matches so far in Stockholm, but one was against a local wild card and the other was against an erratic J.J. Wolf, who couldn’t keep it together consistency-wise to beat him.

Prior to this week, he’d lost his last two matches to prospect Hamad Medjedovic and to Challenger Tour player Rinky HIjikata, both in straight sets (though the former was via retirement in the second set). I rate Machac as highly or even more so than both of them at this stage and think this is a bit of an overvaluation on the Serbian’s chances.

Tomas Machac vs Laslo Djere H2H – Stat of the Match

No meeting yet between these two. I’m looking at the matchup here and how the backhand exchanges play out though.

I don’t think either is particularly strong on that wing, but the question will be can Djere extend the rallies long enough to wait out errors on that side from Machac? It is where the Czech is more susceptible to making mistakes, but because Djere isn’t particularly strong with that shot either, he may be able to keep points short enough to ensure that mistakes are limited in number.
