Thursday Tennis Best Bet: WTA French Open, Aryna Sabalenka vs Karolina Muchova
Aryna Sabalenka vs Karolina Muchova Best Bet: Wednesday, June 8th
One of Iga Swiatek’s worse clay-court matches of the 2023 season means we lose the women’s bet by the slightest of margins. Some nice stuff from Coco Gauff sprinkled in there, but the Pole was absolutely wild on some incredibly easy, simple shots in the early goings.
Onto Thursday, where we’re into the semifinals for the women! Aryna Sabalenka takes on Karolina Muchova, and it has the potential to be an absolutely spectacular affair.
Let’s dig into that one, with a spot in the final on the line.

Talk about a “popcorn match” to kick off the singles action on Chatrier on Thursday.
The world No. 2 in Sabalenka looks to add another chapter to the incredible story that is her 2023 season. One of the biggest servers and hitters on tour, the Belarussian has improved her level of consistency dramatically and is far more intelligent in how she constructs her points on court this season and it shows.
The double faults are down, the big groundstrokes are hit with more margin for error, and as a result, she’s won her first career grand slam, and is two matches from winning her second. That’s to go along with a big title in Madrid, another in Adelaide and another big-time final in Indian Wells.
She’s been really tough to beat in 2023, but I wouldn’t pencil her into the final just yet.
The Czech probably isn’t as well known as her counterpart in this one, simply because she’s struggled with injury issues for what seems like years.
Known for a semifinal appearance in Australia a few years ago, the 26-year-old from Olomouc has matched her best-ever grand slam result by reaching the semis at Roland Garros.
She too has a strong serve and can hit with decent pop from the baseline, but also mixes in drop shots, and slices and can play at the net.
In fact, she’s set to return to the top-20 on Monday with this run and has a chance to surge up the rankings even more if she can pull off the upset against Sabalenka.
While she certainly isn’t the favourite, I don’t think she’s as far off as the odds in the betting markets would indicate.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Karolina Muchova Best Bet
As great as Sabalenka has been this season, I’m not sure she’s this much better than Muchova. Between her ranking and absences due to injury, Muchova often remains one of the more undervalued players when taking on some of the big guns.
As I mentioned, she has all the tools needed to be in the top-10 in the women’s game (and after this run, she won’t be far off that ranking).
She may not have the raw power that Sabalenka does, but she has other parts to her game to make up for it. More importantly, even on clay, she can consistently hold serve to keep herself within reach when Sabalenka goes on a run of her own.
