I was concerned for the teen’s chances in that one, as she’s shown the ability to rout some decent WTA players, but had been humbled by other players at the top of the game in the past.
Jabeur simply had nothing for her on the day and couldn’t overpower the incredibly solid Andreeva. Parry has even less power to offer and isn’t nearly as good as some of the players Andreeva has beaten badly on hard courts.
I’ll take the Russian to end this one swiftly.

Mirra Andreeva Recent Form
It’s been a great start for the youngest player in the top 50 this season.
She reached the quarterfinals of the 500-level event in Brisbane and has now made the third round at a grand slam, beating both her opponents by at least six games.
What’s even more impressive is the quality of the opposition she’s beaten. Four of her five wins have been top-100 players, with two of them being inside the world’s top-15. What’s most impressive is that she lost just five games in four sets to those top-15 women.
She plays an incredibly consistent style, makes a ton of balls from both her forehand and backhand, has elite ball retrieval skills, moves around the court with ease and so far, we’ve even seen her able to dictate play on the quicker courts down under.
Parry is an improving hard courter, but this is too tall a task.
Diane Parry Recent Form
As much as I think that Parry is overmatched in this contest, I have to give credit where it’s due. She has been much better on hard courts to start the season than I had anticipated.
Now, that doesn’t mean that I believe she’s ready to push the likes of Andreeva, but she hasn’t looked nearly as rushed and her one-handed backhand is less vulnerable than I anticipated.
Each of her four wins so far in 2024 has come as an underdog, and her lone loss was also as an outsider and ended in three sets.
Perhaps she can parlay those results into playing with some confidence against Andreeva, but I still don’t believe her serve and forehand combination is nearly powerful enough to keep the youngster at bay.
Mirra Andreeva vs Diane Parry H2H – Stat of the Match
The lone match these two have played came a few months back at the French Open. That one was a second-round battle rather than a third, and Andreeva absolutely crushed Parry.
That may have been on a different surface, but it was Parry’s best surface, which makes this an even more likely candidate for a one-sided affair.
It simply comes down to the fact that it’s tough to figure out a path to victory for the Frenchwoman in this one.
Karen Khachanov vs Tomas Machac (Australian Open) Free Pick: Excellent Run to Come to an End for Surging Czech
- Pick: Karen Khachanov to win & -3 games
- Best Odds: 1.65 & 2.05
- Bookmaker: Pinnacle
- Stakes: 3/10 & 2/10
On the men’s side of things, we have Khachanov – a great hard courter, who has been pretty strong over the last few seasons – taking on one of many young Czech talents in Machac, who has a fun game to watch, hits with decent pace and moves rather fluidly on court.
Machac is certainly becoming more well known in the tennis community and the betting markets reflect that.
My concern is that he may be getting a tad too much respect for the moment. He still lacks consistent wins against top players, hasn’t proven as much in a best-of-five format and I can’t think of much he does better than Khachanov to help him level the playing field.

Karen Khachanov Recent Form
It’s been a tough few rounds for the Russian to reach the third round in Melbourne.
Playing the red-hot serve of Daniel Altmaier and then a huge server in American Aleksandar Kovacevic will do that to a player.
While Machac isn’t exactly underpowered on serve, I do think that Khachanov may be slightly relieved to avoid the sheer power of the last few guys he’s had to battle.
His lone loss of the season came to a redlining Emil Ruusuvuori, who has an elite ground game when he’s hitting his spots, and his last three losses of 2023 came to top-10 talents Daniil Medvedev (in three sets) and Stefanos Tsitispas and the surging Alexander Shevchenko.
Machac could very well replicate what Shevchenko managed in Metz, but this is a grand slam, not a 250 at the end of the season and you need to take an extra set off the top guns to send them packing.
Fact is, Khachanov has proven himself in this format a few times before, has a huge game and is tough to beat unless you’re amongst the best in the sport.
I’ll back him to win here.
Tomas Machac Recent Form
Talk about one of the most in-form players in the top 100 of the ATP rankings, Machac has been on fire now for a few months.
He had an uncharacteristic and throw-away loss to Alex Bolt in his final warmup week for this event, but has looked great so far this week and was solid in his opening week in Brisbane.
He also ended the 2023 season on a tear, winning a few Challenger Tour tournaments and making the second round in Vienna as a qualifier.
The problem I have is two-fold. First, I think that Khachanov is a tough matchup for him. He also does a wide range of things well on the tennis court and should outshine Machac in his hitting, while also being a decent mover for his size.
The second is that in the many matches he’s won in recent times, he lacks more than one or two signature victories. His win last round was an impressive one against Frances Tiafoe – who I think has struggled a bit too much on return in the last year or so – and Jack Draper in a Challenger final late last season.
I’m not sure he’s ready to back up his best win in some time with another against a player that’s even more well-rounded.
Karen Khachanov vs Tomas Machac H2H – Stat of the Match
These two haven’t met just yet, and should play a fairly entertaining match.
I just trust Khachanov’s slightly bigger serve and game from the baseline, along with his experience and his ability to get around the court if Machac is looking to move him side-to-side to come away victorious more often than these odds would suggest.
