Tennis Picks Today: January 17th

  1. Trevisan vs Dodin: Dodin to win
  2. Yastremska vs Gracheva: Yastremska to win

The Australian Open rolls on Wednesday night, as the second round concludes from Melbourne.

With very little value from the men’s side of things, let’s take a look at a pair of women’s matches for our bets on Day 5.

Here are my tips for Martina Trevisan vs Oceane Dodin and Dayana Yastremska.

Martina Trevisan vs Oceane Dodin (Australian Open) Free Pick: Big Serving to Help Propel Dodin to Round 3

  • Pick: Dodin to win
  • Best Odds: 2.57
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 2:30 am UK Time on January 17th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

This is a pretty good matchup for the tall Frenchwoman, considering the courts and conditions on offer in Melbourne.

Trevisan is well known for her abilities on clay courts but has struggled much more on hard courts and quicker surfaces. She had a bit of success late last year in Mexico, but altitude may have assisted her in that run.

Dodin, on the other hand, is about as close to a quick-court specialist as they come. She has a huge serve and a powerful forehand. They were both on display in her opening match against Lin Zhu, as she was able to hit through the counterpuncher, who prefers quick courts herself and generally handles pace well.

Throw in a few medical timeouts for Trevisan in an unimpressive win against an ITF-level player, and I’m happy to back Dodin at nice underdog odds.

Martina Trevisan Recent Form

I’m not sure why the markets like the Italian so much in this spot. Her lone win of the season came last round when she came from behind to beat Renata Zarazua – a player who has shown very little at the main tour level or on hard courts.

Prior to that, Trevisan was dominated by Viktoriya Tomova and Arina Rodionova – two players who aren’t exactly stars either.

Her topspin-heavy game doesn’t work very well on these courts, and she has little to no offensive capabilities to exploit the quicker conditions or take advantage of Dodin’s movement.

Last season, Trevisan did make a run in Guadalajara to the quarterfinals, but the altitude there is conducive to players who employ consistent styles, as the thinner air can make it tough on power players to keep from overcooking groundstrokes and committing errors. That doesn’t help in Melbourne.

I simply can’t pass up on opposing a player like Trevisan when she’s such a heavy favourite in conditions that don’t suit her at all.

Oceane Dodin Recent Form

It was an up-and-down 2023 season for Dodin, who didn’t manage to find much consistent success away from indoor hard courts.

The start to 2024 has proven a nice one for the 27-year-old who likes quick courts and it shouldn’t be all that surprising. The courts in Australia play pretty quickly for the most part, meaning they’re probably as close to indoor hard courts as we’ll see until the fall.

Her huge serve and forehand generate plenty of cheap points and can hit through even the strongest defenders and counterpunchers.

Despite slowing down as she neared the finish line in the first round, she generated far more consistent pressure on return than her opponent in the first round, and knowing how vulnerable Trevisan’s serve can be, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her replicate that performance on Day 5.

Martina Trevisan vs Oceane Dodin H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have yet to play one another in the past.

Much like yesterday’s women’s preview, this provides us with another great stylistic contrast between a bigger server and more return-oriented opponent.

Dayana Yastremska vs Varvara Gracheva (Australian Open) Free Pick: More Explosive Player to Come Through Match Between Erratic Baseliners

  • Pick: Yastremska to win
  • Best Odds: 1.83
  • Bookmaker: Unibet
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as at 2:30 am UK Time on January 17th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

I’m surprised to see Yastremska priced so evenly against Gracheva in the markets, considering they share a weakness to their games, while Yastremska’s upside is much, much higher.

If we want to talk about where each woman is vulnerable, it’s most certainly in their erratic nature from the baseline. Neither of these two plays a style that could be categorised as consistent. The difference between them is that Yastremska’s power could de described as borderline elite.

That means that she’s able to offset some of the unforced errors she hits with winners, and on quicker courts, that power should play up even more. Further, it means she may be able to finish points earlier in rallies, minimising the chances of committing an error.

Her serve isn’t the greatest, especially as it relates to the power on her groundstrokes, but it’s not like Gracheva is impossible to break either.

Dayana Yastremska Recent Form

While form is always important to look at when evaluating odds in tennis markets, it holds more relevance for some players than others.

As strong as Yastremska has played so far in 2024, it’s important to note that her game is susceptible to abandon her at any given moment. It makes it tough to trust her 6-1 record on the year.

She’s the type of player who needs three sets to get through all three of her Grand Slam qualifying matches and then beats a seed badly in the opening round. That’s exactly what has happened in the last 10 days.

Her power is undeniable, but her lack of a plan B and her inability to think through points and construct them with intent have always held her back.

Luckily, she should also be the beneficiary of some poor errors in this one, potentially cancelling out many of her own mistakes.

Varvara Gracheva Recent Form

Somehow Gracheva has managed to rack up as many wins in the last few weeks to start her 2024 season as she had between July and October of 2023. One of those wins during her downswing late last season also came as a lucky loser.

Gracheva could certainly use the points too, with a stretch of strong results from 2023 coming up soon. Defending fourth-round points from Indian Wells and Miami, along with a final run in Austin is going to be a tough task for someone who has had serious trouble winning more than one match at any given tournament for the last 6-8 months.

She made the quarters in Auckland a few weeks ago, but that was her first since Bad Homburg – a lead-in tournament to Wimbledon.

While she has a decent pace on her shots, it’s not nearly enough to make up for how often she sprays errors.

That’s why we see her results bottom out for such long periods at a time.

With Yastremska’s powerful groundstrokes coming at her, it’s going to be tough for the Frenchwoman to keep that error count down.

Dayana Yastremska vs Varvara Gracheva H2H – Stat of the Match

No previous meeting between the two up-and-down players.

I’ll be watching for the first-serve percentage from Yastremska. If she can land those first deliveries at a higher rate, she should be in good shape. With the second serve being rather attackable, relying on too many of them could spell trouble for her.
