Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ugo Humbert (Rolex Shanghai Masters): Monday, October 9th

A nice comeback win for Zhizhen Zhang, who is still battling away in Shanghai and into the final 16, as he beat a surprisingly tough Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Friday.

We’ll stick with the Rolex Shanghai Masters Monday for our ATP preview, as this is one of the expanded Masters events that takes two weeks to complete. Let’s look at Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ugo Humbert.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ugo Humbert Expert Tip

We’ve long known that the top Greek is one of the best players in the world, but can struggle at times against strong servers in quicker conditions.

Enter Humbert, who doesn’t just have a big serve, but a big lefty serve, which can target the least effective tool in Tsitsipas’ arsenal in his one-handed backhand, that is susceptible to being rushed.

I’ll back him to pull off the upset here as well on relatively fast courts.

  • Expert Tip: Humbert to win at 2.50 with Bet365, using 3/10 stakes.

Odds as at 1:00 am UK Time on October 9th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Recent Form

Tough to take much from Tsitsipas of late. Despite being a top-10 player, he hasn’t won back-to-back matches since early August, when he won the Los Cabos title (on pretty slow courts, it should be said).

Since then, a slew of big servers have managed to topple him, including Hubert Hurkacz, Gael Monfils, Dominic Stricker and Nicolas Jarry (all of whom were underdogs as well entering the match, suggesting there’s an overvaluation against this profile of player in the markets).

With poor form, a player that he typically struggles with and conditions that don’t suit his game, I struggle to justify making him a fairly strong favourite in this one.

Ugo Humbert Recent Form

Getting back to quick courts recently has served the 25-year-old well.

He picked up a pair of wins indoors at the Davis Cup and has won three of four since then. It’s not like he’s been playing unknown players either.

His matches have come against the likes of Cam Norrie, Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev, Stan Wawrinka, Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Sonego and Botic van de Zandschulp. These are all bona fide tour-level pros, and having more wins than losses against that group is certainly an encouraging sign.

Shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the Frenchman’s game is suited for success in these conditions. The flat balls stay nice and low, the rallies are relatively short and help limit the errors and his huge serve allows him to find a steady dose of nice, easy points in his service games.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ugo Humbert H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have played three times in the past, all on hard courts as well. While every one of the meetings has ended in three sets, the Frenchman has actually managed to come out on top twice.

It really just goes back to the fact that with his power and flat hitting taking time away from opponents, Tsitsipas is really going to struggle to apply pressure in Humbert’s service games.

Let’s see if Humbert can give him trouble once more on Monday.
