Sara Bejlek vs Panna Udvardy (LP Open): Friday, November 17th

What a result from Yulia Starodubtseva, who had no problem taking care of the relatively weaponless ITF Tour grinder Guillermina Naya in straight sets for our bets.

Friday brings us the quarterfinals of the LP Open from the WTA 125K in Chile. Let’s look at Sara Bejlek vs Panna Udvardy.

Sara Bejlek vs Panna Udvardy Expert Tip

  • Expert Tip: Udvardy to win
  • Best Odds: 2.09
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as of 3:00 am UK Time on November 17th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Much like Maximilian Marterer from the men’s previews this week, Udvardy is providing us with a chance to double dip, backing her here against a strong young talent in Bejlek.

I am a big fan of Bejlek on clay courts, but I do think Udvardy has a bit more pop to her game, her serve is less vulnerable (especially in altitude) and her game doesn’t go haywire quite as often.

Give me underdog odds and I’m happy to have a small stakes bet on the Hungarian to win.

Read on for more Expert Insights.

Sara Bejlek Recent Form

It’s been a nice season for the 17-year-old, who continues to progress and is inside the world’s top 200.

It’s understandable why she prefers clay courts at the moment, as she’s not just from a country that plays more on clay, but she’s also fairly underpowered at present as well.

The consistency isn’t in question and she has tried to ramp up the aggression a bit this season, but it’s also led to her spraying more errors on the forehand wing.

It’s something many teenagers on the women’s side struggle with, as they can climb the rankings just by playing solid, consistent tennis from the baseline, but having a relatively low ceiling due to how little power they have.

There are growing pains when we see those players try to add that pace to their game and that’s been the case in some of Bejlek’s losses this year.

Now, she’s got a great record on the dirt in 2023 and is on a seven-match win streak entering this contest, but dating all the way back to Wimbledon, the slew of wins she’s managed to pull off have come against much lower-level competition.

That’s been a theme for us this week when we look to oppose in-form players who are being overvalued, and that’s the case once more in this one.

Panna Udvardy Recent Form

The late-season resurgence for the 25-year-old Udvardy continues in Chile.

After reaching the Macon and Charleston ITF finals, she’s now looking to make it a third semifinal appearance in her last four tournaments played.

She actually did this last year as well, going deep late in the season in Barranquilla, before winning the WTA 125K tournament in Buenos Aires (we’ll be previewing the 2023 edition of that event next week).

This is clearly a time of the season she enjoys, with the fields in South America being somewhat weaker. A player of her calibre should tend to thrive in these late-season tournaments and that’s just what she’s done for the last few years.

Her serve and power should be a bit bigger here, and she’s a slight favourite for me, rather than a slight underdog.

Sara Bejlek vs Panna Udvardy H2H – Stat of the Match

No previous meeting between Bejlek and Udvardy to break down.

For me, the serving stats on the young Czech are what stand out here.

If we look at her numbers from the ITF Tour on clay courts this year (not even the main pro circuit), Bejlek only wins about 51% of points behind her first serve and about 43% of points behind her second delivery.

While Udvardy may not be a world-beater behind her own serve, she doesn’t tend to struggle to that extent, and with more strength at the moment, this should be a match full of service breaks with Udvardy as the more likely of the two to hold her serve here and there.
