Between the matchup and talent mismatches here, I actually make this a six-game spread, making this a lovely proposition to back.

Ludmilla Samsonova Recent Form
After a horrific, sloppy, error-filled start to her 2024 campaign down under (in conditions one would think would suit her game), Samsonova has started to show signs of being a top-15 player again in the last few weeks.
She demolished both Lesia Tsurenko and Anhelina Kalinina – two players that are underpowered, much like Tomova, though both decidedly better overall players – before losing in three sets to Elena Rybakina back in Abu Dhabi.
Her early loss last week came at the hands of a tricky counterpuncher in Leylah Fernandez, and that came in two very close sets.
She’s playing with much more control than she was in Australia, and that should help her roll in this one.
Viktoriya Tomova Recent Form
The 28-year-old Bulgarian has been busy so far in 2024, playing every week the WTA has had tournaments on offer. She’s won seven matches (though under half of them have been in main draws) to this point, but has also lost seven times, and more importantly, against the better competition she’s come up against, she’s lost fairly decisively.
That’s because, against middling players, she can grind them down, rarely gets hit through and can expect a few more errors from her opponents’ racquets.
Against the better players, she simply has very little to offer outside of rally tolerance and defending, hoping her opposition commits errors. That’s much less effective against tougher competition for obvious reasons.
In five of her seven losses this year, she’s lost at least one set by a score of 6-2 or worse, and many of the players that were able to put up lopsided scorelines against her (Emma Navarro, Camila Osorio and Julia Riera) aren’t anywhere near the level that Samsonova can produce in my power ratings.
Ludmilla Samsonova vs Viktoriya Tomova H2H – Stat of the Match
These two split the prior two matches, but the Tomova win came in the 2019 season – a time when Samsonova was still developing as a player and wasn’t nearly as strong as she is today.
The recent matchup was a seven-game Samsonova win on quick courts (grass) last season. I don’t think that means this spread should be at seven, as we have to look at probabilities, but I do think that the second result was more indicative of what we should expect from Monday’s match than the match that took place almost five years ago.
