We may be witnessing Jabeur starting to turn the tide on her poor form, but I don’t think we’ve seen enough to make her the slightest of underdogs against Ostapenko, who has looked strong this week and we know she can be really difficult to stop once she gains steam.
I do like Jabeur’s serve a bit more, but in terms of aggression, I prefer Ostapenko and with the way Jabeur has been struggling to play any kind of sustained, high-level tennis, I have made her a slightly larger underdog.
Read on for more expert insights.
Jelena Ostapenko Recent Form
After a strong start to her campaign that saw titles in Adelaide and Linz at the 500 level, Ostapenko cooled off a bit as the spring schedule arrived.
Considering how aggressively she plays, it does make sense that she’ll go through hot and cold patches. Few can match her power from the baseline when she is playing well. This week she’s dispatched two clay court specialists with absolute ease.
Her opponent this time around is tougher than Maria Carle or Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, but it’s an opponent that has been awful relative to expectations so far in 2024.
I like Ostapenko at this price to keep her momentum going in the Spanish capital.
Ons Jabeur Recent Form
After the market initially backed Ostapenko in a big way, we’ve seen some money push back here and take a position on the Jabeur side.
It’s easy to understand why. Even with the horrendous form in 2024 (more losses than wins as a top-10 player is an incredibly rare statistic to see), Jabeur’s game is so strong. Her serve is good, the hitting from the baseline is also a plus and she can mix in both slices and dropshots to give her a well rounded game.
The unforced errors and admitted confidence issues have done some real damage to her results though, with Madrid being the first time this season she’s won two matches in an event.
Even then, she beat a pair of lighter servers and fairly error prone players and she needed three sets to do so against both Leylah Fernandez and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. She didn’t cover the handicap in either of those, indicating that she’s still been disappointing in wins.
Jelena Ostapenko vs Ons Jabeur H2H – Stat of the Match
The head-to-head between these two is knotted up at 2-2. Jabeur won the most recent encounter last season, but was down 1-6 and was obviously playing better than what she’s put forth of late.
