Nuno Borges vs Enrico Dalla Valle (Maia Open): Thursday, November 30th

Rough match for Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, who will certainly want back an opening set that saw him generate five times the break points, but fail to convert any of them. He ends up losing in three sets as a result.

For Thursday, we’ll go back to the indoor clay Maia Open in Portugal and preview Nuno Borges vs Enrico Dalla Valle for our ATP Challenger Tour preview.

Nuno Borges vs Enrico Dalla Valle Expert Tip

  • Expert Tip: Borges -4.5 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.93
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 5/10

As much as the conditions are a bit quicker in terms of courts and being indoors in Maia, the disparity in talent here is too much to ignore. This is a handicap that Dalla Valle has struggled to cover against top tier Challenger opposition, and Borges easily fits that description.

I’ve kept from going with a max staking here, simply because the serve has been faring decently for the Italian, so I don’t know if I can justify the handicap being -5.5 games or -6 games, but it is certainly closer to -5.5 in my books than it is -4.5.

Odds as at 1:00 am UK Time on November 30th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Nuno Borges Recent Form

It’s been a season spent inside the top-100 for Borges, and that means it’s one that has had its fair share of struggles.

His record on clay prior to this week was just 3-6, but only one other match had come on the dirt at the Challenger level – and even that was played at one of the new 175 events that awards almost as many points as a tour-level 250 and has fields just as strong, since they take place in the second weeks of the newly extended Masters tournaments.

He just got by the tricky Mohamed Safwat in the opening round, but he shouldn’t have nearly as tough a time with Dalla Valle, who simply isn’t yet at the Challenger Tour level against strong competition.

Borges’ serve has actually been surprisingly strong in somewhat quick conditions and though Dalla Valle’s has improved, I’m confident that the Portuguese pro won’t have the troubles returning he did against the likes of Dominik Koepfer, Maximilian Marterer or Titouan Droguet on quick hard courts.

He has a serve that should hold up and a huge baseline advantage. I’d expect him to ease through this second rounder.

Enrico Dalla Valle Recent Form

The work Dalla Valle has put in to reach a new career-high ranking of 288 is certainly commendable, but it’s still telling that he’s barely inside the top-300 at the moment.

His progress has helped make him one of the more dominant forces on the ITF Tour, but he has struggled in the main draws of Challenger Tour tournaments. In fact, his only two quarterfinals at this level this year have come on home soil in Italy.

The most potent part of this handicap, however, is that his losses against strong competition this season have almost exclusively been by a wide margin.

Whether it be Fabian Marozsan, Matteo Gigante, Lukas Klein (though on a hard court), the prospect Gilles Arnaud Bailly, or Flavio Cobolli, he’s lost by a margin greater than 4.5 games. Even in the Cobolli match that saw him win a set, he wasn’t able to keep the margin of his defeat below five games.

It’s clear to me that this is the step up in competition that the Italian has yet to prove himself against, and I’m fine opposing him in such a situation.

Nuno Borges vs Enrico Dalla Valle H2H – Stat of the Match

No head-to-head record in this matchup, but as we’ve seen a lot this week, that in and of itself kind of makes my case.

These two simply play on different tours. It’s hard to come across each other when the draws that Borges are included in, Dalla Valle doesn’t even have the ranking to get into.
