It’s tough to make a case that the younger of the two Argentines should be the favourite in this match. He’s not in better form, doesn’t possess superior weapons and he hasn’t got the more impressive overall resume on the ATP Tour for his career.

He’s surged in the last year or so and was impressive through qualifying, but Coria is simply the more accomplished player, in even better form at the moment and can match, if not outlast, Navone’s solidity from the baseline.

Read on for more expert insights.

Mariano Navone Recent Form

After winning five Challengers on the dirt between June and the end of the season (he added a sixth final late in the year in Lima, Peru as well), Navone has made the jump to start 2024 playing more at the main tour level now that it has returned to clay during this Golden Swing through South America.

He hasn’t been great in main draw action to this point, losing badly to Luciano Darderi last week in Buenos Aires and from a set-up to Roberto Carballes Baena the week prior in Cordoba.

He did have a pair of nice wins on the weekend to get into this main draw, but he didn’t face the sternest tests in those two matches and I’m not sure I’d take much from those when looking at this match.

Navone’s game is based primarily on his ability not to miss many shots, work the court well side to side and play well on the backhand side. He’s also added a bit of aggression to go with his heavy forehand which has served him well.

That said, does he have enough pop to hit through Coria on clay? Of that, I’m not so sure. This feels like a very close match, with Navone the player that hasn’t really come up with many good wins at this point in the season relative to his countryman.

Federico Coria Recent Form

It’d be hard to make the case that there’s a more in-form player on clay right now than Coria.

Since losing his first match to Renzo Olivo in Punta del Este at a Challenger, Coria has reeled off 10 wins in his last 13 matches on the surface, including wins against Daniel Altmaier, Albert Ramos Vinolas, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Cam Norrie and Sebastian Baez.

Coria does a really good job of spreading his shots around the court, waiting out opponent errors and being patient until he finds a bit of space he has time to hit through.

Power isn’t really part of his game, but he is smart enough to create situations where he can be a bit more offensive.

Add that to his incredibly strong return and consistency and you can understand why he’s had success, despite being underpowered.

Mariano Navone vs Federico Coria H2H – Stat of the Match

The primary reason the markets have Navone ahead here has to be because of his 3-1 lead in the head-to-head series. It’s worth noting a few things though. First, two of his three wins came in three sets and he trailed by a set in each of those victories.

Second, those wins were during a purple patch of form for the soon-to-be 23-year-old. Now, he’s struggling a bit making the jump to a higher level of competition, while it’s Coria that has been on a tear.
