Cristina Bucsa vs Tamara Korpatsch Best Bet: Monday, April 17th

Well it was shaky from Zsombor Piros, who was forced to be the aggressor and simply couldn’t continually keep the ball within the court. In the end, he did beat Radu Albot in the quarterfinals, despite facing 18 break point chances.

The WTA Tour is back this week with a 500 event in Stuttgart, Germany. There’s also a very high level ITF event in Portugal we can look at.

For Monday’s selection, we’ll head to the event in Stuttgart and preview the match between Cristina Bucsa and Tamara Korpatsch.

Cristina Bucsa vs Tamara Korpatsch Preview

April 17th, 14:30 (UK Time)

The first big event on red clay of the season is here for the WTA Tour and, as always, the field in Stuttgart is stacked. Most of the best players in the world are set to compete on indoor clay that plays unusually quick for red dirt.

The lone match that doesn’t feature a fairly recognizable name? This one, where a pair of players that came through the qualifying draw go toe-to-toe for a spot in the second round of a 500-level tournament – a place neither woman is particularly accustomed to being.

Korpatsch – who is sure to have the German crowd’s support – was efficient in reaching the main draw, winning all four sets she played in qualifying. She dispatched Kathinka von Deichmann and Alycia Parks to book her place in the main draw.

Her Spanish opponent, on the other hand, was involved in an absolute dog fight in the final round of qualifying to get to this spot.

After a solid straight sets win over German prospect Noma Noha Akugue, it took Bucsa over three hours and a trio of long, hard-fought sets to beat American Katie Volynets. She also had to come back from 1-5 down in the opening set, and then save match points in the deciding set in order to get that done.

Korpatsch is another player in the vein of Volynets, who will make a boat load of balls, prolong rallies and make things physical. The difference? She’s a more natural clay courter than the American.

Cristina Bucsa vs Tamara Korpatsch Best Bet

Putting aside the potential fatigue from an absolute war in the final round of qualifying, I have this matchup as nearly dead-even.

When two players employ a similar game style on a surface that rewards consistency, I have a tough time making one a clear favourite over the other.

Throw in potential fatigue for Bucsa, and the fact that Korpatsch could very well force her into another war of attrition from the baseline, and I have the Spaniard as far more likely to break down as this one wears on.

As a result, that moves my price on Korpatsch from about even money as a toss up, to a slight favourite.

With the German an underdog in the markets, I’ll happily back her to advance to the second round.

  • Selection: Korpatsch to win
  • Best Odds: 2.23 (Unibet)
  • Stakes: 5/10

Odds as at 4:00 am on April 17h, 2023. Odds may now differ.
