Mirra Andreeva vs Tamara Korpatsch (Tennis in the Land): Monday, August 21st

It was an out of sorts opening set from Iga Swiatek, but the world No. 1 found her tennis in the second set for a dominant finish that saw both handicaps end up cashing.

Monday’s WTA preview for Tennis in the Land from Cleveland looks at Mirra Andreeva vs Tamara Korpatsch.

Mirra Andreeva vs Tamara Korpatsch Expert Tip

I think the relatively close match that these two played at Wimbledon is keeping the market from pushing Andreeva into being an even larger favourite than she already is.

That was more a by-product of her playing some really messy tennis for the first two sets than anything. That happens to every player, especially one as young as her. It’s a testament to her game, however, that those patches of error-filled tennis are rather rare.

That’s why I think that this total of 19.5 games is a full game too high.

We’ve seen lopsided sets and wins over much better opposition in straight sets from the younger of the Andreeva sisters.

I’m happy to back that to occur again here.

Mirra Andreeva Recent Form

We haven’t seen much of Andreeva lately on tour (I would guess that may have something to do with restrictions on how many events she can play in a season due to her age).

It was late July the last time she played on the pro circuit. She was upset in Lausanne by Anna Bondar that week.

Other than that, it’s been a meteoric rise up the rankings for the Russian teenager.

She turned heads by making the final 16 in Madrid, and then qualified and won multiple main draw matches at both the French Open and Wimbledon. I’d venture to say that those may be the last two grand slam qualifying fields we have to see her navigate for quite some time.

Her game is founded on consistency and the ability to prolong points from the baseline. The 2023 season has seen her add more aggression to the way she plays as well, which has turned her into a dual threat on the court.

The power still has plenty of room for improvement (that will come with time as she gets a bit older), but there’s no doubt she’s looking to finish points on the front foot more often this year than last.

Tamara Korpatsch Recent Form

It’s been a mixed bag for Korpatsch during the summer hard-court swing.

She had a nice run in Prague, but didn’t really beat anyone significant other than Alize Cornet, and she was absolutely throttled by Linda Noskova in the semifinals.

Other than that, she’s beaten just Miyu Kato – a doubles specialist – and the soon-to-be-retired Maryna Zanevska.

It shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise though, as Korpatsch is a more natural clay-court player.

She has very few weapons to play attacking tennis at her disposal and is almost always more reliant on her opposition having a poor day and missing their spots.

On a hard court, it can be tougher to force players to play more shots, as those with power can find winners much more easily.

I wouldn’t expect much from Korpatsch this week, who is only into the main draw as a lucky loser (she lost her final qualifying match to Magdalena Frech).

Mirra Andreeva vs Tamara Korpatsch H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have only played once – a match Andreeva won in three sets in Wimbledon qualifying this year.

As mentioned above, that match was a surprisingly poor one through two sets for Andreeva, who was more erratic than we’ve seen in a typical match.

For the stat of the match, I have to go to one of the tried and true statistics bandied about in the tennis betting world.

The hold plus break percentage at tour level in this one tells a great story, with Andreeva coming in at over 113% – a very, very strong number – while Korpatsch has a much more disappointing 92%. That spread of over 20 points is a head turning margin.

Combined with the game styles and surface, I’m happy to back Andreeva here, even if it is her first match on a hard court of the season.

Odds as at 3:30 am UK Time on August 21st, 2023. Odds may now differ.
