Maximilian Marterer vs Arthur Fery (Good to Great Challenger): Wednesday, November 15th

Well, that was a no-show from Viktor Durasovic, who was outmatched from the start by Titouan Droguet in Illinois.

For Wednesday’s ATP preview, it’s back to the Good to Great Challenger in Sweden, where we’ll look at Maximilian Marterer vs Arthur Fery.

Maximilian Marterer vs Arthur Fery Expert Tip

It’s another match featuring the big German lefty that sees him undervalued in a big way. Some of that may be the market not catching up to his surge and talent quickly enough, but I believe a larger part of it is the overvaluation on Fery coming into this match.

We’ll go over in more detail why I believe Fery is getting too much credit in the betting markets in a minute, but suffice it to say the wins he amassed at a trio of French Challengers in recent months has the market showing him a bit too much love for me.

  • Expert Tip: Marterer -1.5 Games at 1.80 with bet365, using 10/10 stakes.

Odds as at 2:00 am UK Time on November 15th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Maximilian Marterer Recent Form

We detailed the resurgence of Marterer earlier this week in our Monday preview, and I’m happy to rehash his recent success here once more.

After a leave from the world’s top 100, we’ve seen a more sustained period of fitness for the 28-year-old, which has led to an unsurprising return to that club.

We’ve seen some incredible performances in Antwerp at the main tour level and in both Ismaning and Alicante on the Challenger Tour.

The southpaw has a strong combination of a big serve, power and movement, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that his career high ranking saw him inside the top 50 at one point in his career.

We also know that the market hasn’t quite caught up to his level of play of late, since the last match he was a 3-game favourite in a contest that called for a 3.5-game handicap at a minimum.

I’ll gladly back him against the improving Fery, who in my estimation is still a class below him.

Arthur Fery Recent Form

It’s been an incredible summer and fall swing on the hard courts for the Brit who has played college tennis for Stanford University the last few years.

After winning an ITF title and reaching another final, he took the Challenger Tour by storm, reaching the quarterfinal stage or better not once, not twice, but three times as a qualifier.

My main problem with Fery’s game is that I find the ceiling to be relatively low – certainly compared to his opponent in this matchup – and though he did beat some strong players in those runs, many are either on the decline in their careers or very volatile in their results on the court.

His losses? They tend to happen in routine fashion and have come against strong players like Liam Broady (four-game margin of defeat), Tomas Machac (five-game margin of defeat), Benjamin Bonzi (five games) or Gabriel Diallo (seven games).

Having him as a 1.5-to-2-game underdog in this situation just doesn’t compute.

Maximilian Marterer vs Arthur Fery H2H – Stat of the Match

No prior head-to-head to look at between these two.

In terms of stats to look at, the elo ratings on hard courts are in Marterer’s corner by a decent margin, while if we were to look at the careers of each player, we’d see only one has any data points to break down at the tour level (Marterer) and there’s also a substantial difference in how much each of these guys has played at this level as well.

Not sure what points to Fery in this matchup, or even it is a close Marterer win. Are those outcomes in the realm of possibility? Of course. Do their likelihoods match up with the odds? Not even close, at least by my calculations.
