Marketa Vondrousova vs Elina Svitolina Best Bet: Thursday, July 13th

A little taste of good fortune in Contrexeville on Wednesday, as Arantxa Rus comes back from 3-6 down to beat Erika Andreeva by exactly three games. It’s not a bet won, but it appeared as though it’d be a bet lost for a long stretch of that match and we ended up with our stake back. I’ll take it!

For Thursday, it’s women’s semifinals day from the All England Club, as the men are off until Friday and the women battle it out to see who will contest the ladies final on Saturday. Let’s delve into the first semifinal of the day between Marketa Vondrousova and Elina Svitolina.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Elina Svitolina Preview

Thu, July 13th, 13:30 (UK Time)

Is the third time the charm for the Ukrainian at this edition of Wimbledon? Having yet to reach the final of a grand slam, despite all her other success at the WTA level, the 28-year-old is hoping that 2023 brings her first chance at a grand slam trophy.

After reaching the semis at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open during her 2019 campaign, it’s taken just two slams since becoming a mother for Svitolina to go as far as she ever has at the top level.

Vondrousova, meanwhile, at only 24 years old is four years removed from her maiden appearance in a grand slam final, as she made the last round of the French Open as a youngster in 2019.

Far more suited to clay, thanks to her incredible court coverage, rock-solid baseline game and groundstrokes that employ a fair amount of topspin, she’s been the beneficiary of some decent matchups and fortunate circumstances in her run to this deep stage of the tournament.

Last round she upset Jessica Pegula, who seems to have a mental block when it comes to getting past the quarterfinal round at the slams, while her only other strong wins were against Veronika Kudermetova (who hit nearly 40 unforced errors in just 18 games) and Donna Vekic – who had no rest thanks to all the rain and was off a three-hour marathon match the day prior.

With the added dimension to Svitolina’s game, I do believe she’s better positioned for success on the grass.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Elina Svitolina Best Bet

I think it’s worth remembering that when it comes to being deep in the second week of a grand slam, it’s very rare that you’re going to see a big mistake made in terms of where the odds are at.

The knowledge that bookmakers’ traders, as well as the rest of the market, have on some of the top players in the game is substantial, and the prices on offer are going to be relatively efficient as a result.

That said, I do think there is some value on Svitolina in this spot. I’m still not completely sold on Vondrousova’s path to this point in the tournament and Svitolina has an incredibly solid game, with counterpunching and solidity as strengths, while she’s also made a concerted effort to add some aggression to her toolbox and it’s shown so far at The Championships.

With her at above evens money, I’ll gladly back her to reach her first major final.

  • Selection: Svitolina to win
  • Best Odds: 2.20 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 1:00 am UK Time on July 13th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
