Wednesday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Nottingham, Maria Sakkari vs Alize Cornet
Maria Sakkari vs Alize Cornet Best Bet: Wednesday, June 14th
After no results to update yesterday, we ended up coming in with a pair of wins from the women’s side of things on Tuesday. Elizabeth Mandlik failed to serve out the match in the third set, but won the decisive tiebreak, while Viktorija Golubic managed a tidy straight sets win against Jil Teichmann.
We’ll look to find another nice result on Wednesday, as we look to the tournament in Nottingham and preview the match featuring Maria Sakkari and Alize Cornet.

Maria Sakkari vs Alize Cornet Preview
June 14th, 14:00 (UK Time)
A tale of two seasons for these two women, as Sakkari has quietly put together a rather solid season, while Cornet has struggled for the vast majority of the 2023 campaign to this point.
While the Greek No. 1 has had some early exits, consider who she’s lost to in 2023. Karolina Pliskova – a longtime contender on the WTA Tour – Karolina Muchova, one of the most underrated players on tour and recent French Open finalist, Aryna Sabalenka (the world No. 2) and the list goes on.
It’s taken a really talented player and more often than not, one with big weapons to really beat Sakkari.
Cornet not only has an underpowered game, but hasn’t been very strong historically on the grass, and has been downright bad over the last few months.
She can’t take much time away from her opposition, and with Sakkari far more capable of seizing control of points on the return of serve, I struggle to see Cornet’s path to victory in this matchup, barring an error-strewn display from her 27-year-old counterpart.

Those error-strewn matches aren’t out of the question for Sakkari. She can also get annoyed with herself and let it impact her in a negative way, but that tends to happen against players that can rush her from the baseline.
Many are hesitant to give away head starts of three or four games on the quicker grass courts, but this particular matchup isn’t as concerning. Cornet doesn’t possess a booming serve to rack up the cheap service holds that would make this handicap concerning, and the offensive tennis is almost entirely in Sakkari’s favour.
Combined with the form and the quality of competition that its taken to beat Sakkari this year, I have this handicap at -5 games, which is a rather large difference given how tennis’ scoring format works.
- Selection: Sakkari -4 Games
