Nice win from Nuria Brancaccio on home soil against an ITF calibre player in Tessah Andrianjafitrimo. It was a little closer than it needed to be, thanks to a blown break of serve lead in the second, but it ended in straight sets, nonetheless.
For Tuesday’s writeup from the women’s action on offer, we’ll stick with the event in Palermo and look at the match featuring a familiar foe, as Lucia Bronzetti goes up against Erika Andreeva.

Well, one of our previews last week featured the Russian and talked about her being overvalued, and it doesn’t appear as though the market has adjusted at all in the last few days.
Once again, the steady, but weaponless Andreeva is taking on a player that is a legitimate WTA Tour level talent on the red dirt, yet Bronzetti isn’t as strong of a favourite as I’d expect, or as big a favourite as my numbers indicate.
Much like Arantxa Rus, Bronzetti has the chops and consistency to stick with Andreeva here, but packs far more of a punch in terms of offensive capabilities.
She’s developed a forehand that can both counterpunch and turn up the pop on its own, and her movement and point construction are both strengths.
Taking on an opponent who can’t really blow her off the court and who will be reliant on unforced errors from her racquet, this appears to be a pretty good early-round matchup for the Italian, who is sure to have the home fans at her back.

It may be Bronzetti’s first match back on the dirt post-grass season, but that isn’t a huge concern for me.
It’s her primary surface, where she’s had her success this season and just won a title on the red stuff prior to the French Open in Morocco.
With a higher level of competition, a better pedigree on the surface and the more well-rounded game, I can’t see why she’s only a 1.63-odds favourite here. I’m happy to back her to get the job done against Andreeva.
This time we don’t have to worry about a handicap on our primary bet though, so we can win it, rather than have it void!
