Lin Zhu vs Mayar Sherif (U.S. Open): Monday, August 28th

It was an epic collapse from Diana Shnaider on our Thursday bet, as she had two match points to cash in both the to win and handicap bets. After blowing those, she had another five match points to bring home the bet to win the match and void the handicap. She took none of them and lost the match in three sets. As for Katie Volynets, things went more according to plan there, as the American dominated the first and third sets for the win.

For our first preview on the WTA side of things, we’ll look into Lin Zhu vs Mayar Sherif in a first-round clash from the U.S. Open.

Lin Zhu vs Mayar Sherif Expert Tip

An absolute barrage of tennis to come on Monday with so many matches taking place. This one may not be the most flashy one on the slate, but it certainly is one of the best matches to bet on the board.

I’m always keen on opposing the Egyptian on hard courts. Her style of play is so suited to clay that it actually hampers her chances when playing on the quicker hard courts.

Zhu, by contrast, is not only in form after a strong week in Cleveland, but is the polar opposite. She plays a style that is conducive to quicker, lower-bouncing surfaces and struggles on clay.

With the U.S. Open obviously being played on hard courts, I love the handicap here at anything under -4.5 games.

Read on for more expert insights.

  • Expert Tips: Zhu -3 Games at 1.93 with Pinnacle, using 4/10 stakes. Zhu -4 Games at 2.31 with Pinnacle, using 2/10 stakes.

Lin Zhu Recent Form

If there was any player who could’ve used a strong week leading into the U.S. Open, it was Zhu, who had gone on a bit of a losing skid after making the semifinals on grass in Birmingham back in June.

Not only did she manage to make the semis in Cleveland last week to give her some form and confidence heading into the final grand slam event of the season, but now she’s drawn an incredibly beatable opponent.

Losses this summer to a relatively in-form Yanina Wickmayer (in three sets), Karolina Pliskova (also in three sets) and Anhelina Kalinina likely won’t be on Zhu’s mind either, considering all of those are pretty strong opponents on hard courts.

As for her style, Zhu is a strong counterpuncher, who hits an incredibly flat ball and can hit into the outer thirds of the court from both wings.

While she may not generate huge power herself, the flatter ball striking can make her shots deceptively tough to track down.

Mayar Sherif Recent Form

Sherif is only 1-2 this summer during the hard-court swing, with a surprising win over Xiyu Wang in Cincinnati.

Her two losses, however, have been lopsided affairs. Mind you, they came against top-tier players in Marketa Vondrousova and Coco Gauff, but that shouldn’t dissuade you from the fact that she is eminently beatable in these conditions.

With the way she grips the racquet, it makes it nearly impossible for her to hit a flat, aggressive forehand with power. It’s nearly all topspin-based, and that makes it one heck of a weapon on clay, but it makes her forehands underpowered at best on hard courts and sitting ducks at worst.

If there’s one player I have very few expectations for this fall, it’s the 27-year-old.

Lin Zhu vs Mayar Sherif H2H – Stat of the Match

These two haven’t played in the past, but that shouldn’t be all that noteworthy, considering one goes out of her way to play on clay, while the other does everything possible to avoid the dirt courts.

As for the stat of the match, I have to go to the elo ratings for these two.

Tennis Abstract’s raw hard-court elo rating has Zhu over 200 points ahead. That is a massive lead that suggests Zhu is an overwhelming favourite in a matchup on hard courts.

Three games simply isn’t a large enough handicap in this one.

Odds as at 2:30 am UK Time on August 28th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
