Lesia Tsurenko vs Diana Shnaider (Zhengzhou Open): Monday, October 9th

A nice win for Elena Rybakina in a match that wasn’t as close as I had originally expected.

For our WTA preview on Monday, we’ll look at the 500 level tournament in the Zhengzhou Open and Lesia Tsurenko vs Diana Shnaider.

Lesia Tsurenko vs Diana Shnaider Expert Tip

A few things have me on Tsurenko’s side here.

For starters, she’s been really strong on hard courts this season and that combines well with the second issue at hand, which is the fact that Shnaider retired in her second set on Sunday in her qualifying match down 2-6, 0-3 as she was being beaten convincingly.

Perhaps it was a minor issue, but she is in this draw as a lucky loser, taking on a player that likes to make things physical and won’t have a day off to try and rest and get back to 100%.

Lesia Tsurenko Recent Form

Now 26-10 on hard courts this season, Tsurenko has faltered a bit of late, but it’s hard to blame her when she’s had to compete against some of the better players on hard courts in the game in Veronika Kudermetova and Ekaterina Alexandrova at recent events.

While Shnaider has the power to trouble her, she’s also incredibly erratic at times and as we saw over the weekend, doesn’t appear to be in the best physical condition at the moment.

The other nice part of backing Tsurenko here is that she, too, came through the qualifying draw. On occasion, a qualifier or lucky loser that has a pair of matches under their belt at the venue can be an advantage for that player, but that won’t be the case here for Shnaider, with Tsurenko also being acclimated to start the main draw.

In fact, if anything, it’d be an advantage for the Ukrainian, who absolutely breezed through both her opponents and is in terrific form while also being used to the courts.

With a physical style and the willingness to play extended rallies, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her wear down Shnaider and find a lopsided set win as the match unfolds.

Diana Shnaider Recent Form

It had been a rough summer for Shnaider until she reached the final in Ningbo a few weeks back.

That was a favourable draw for her, and by the final she did appear as though she was running out of steam, as Ons Jabeur handled her with ease in the final.

The only matches she’s played since that final? An easy win against a wild card in qualifying and then Sunday’s match that saw her retire midway through the second set.

I’m not convinced by her form or her health at the moment, and even at 100%, Tsurenko’s incredible defensive play should pose plenty of questions for the volatile young Russian.

Lesia Tsurenko vs Diana Shnaider H2H – Stat of the Match

No previous meeting between these two. Makes sense with Shnaider still being relatively young and spending a few months playing some NCAA tennis at North Carolina State University, despite already having a pretty strong WTA ranking at the end of the 2022 season.

For me, it’ll all come down to who can manufacture more holds of serve.

Tsurenko is an elite returner on the WTA Tour, but her serve is also a serious liability. Can Shnaider play within herself and play with controlled aggression on return? If not, she may commit too many errors and hand over easy holds of serve to Tsurenko.
