Hard to believe that a top-35 player on tour on his preferred surface is only valued to win this contest about 60%, but here we are.

I’m not complaining, after all it’s these kinds of poor prices that allow us to make money in the long run betting on tennis! Djere is far too well rounded and too strong on his preferred surface for a poor mover and somewhat one dimensional Vavassori.

The world No. 152 somehow manages to put in thoroughly unimpressive results at the Challenger Tour level and then do consistently well in grand slam qualifying, sometimes a grand slam main draw and pick up random tour-level wins here and there.

He serves and volleys a lot (though on clay it’s not as effective and I wouldn’t expect to see it as much), but with his serve being his big weapon, the slow conditions on red clay at sea level in Buenos Aires won’t help him very much.

Read on for more expert insights.

Laslo Djere Recent Form

The Serbian has done an excellent job in recent years of going from a clay courter to a more well rounded player that can now compete across surfaces.

That said, he hasn’t forgotten how to play on his most natural surface, and I’d actually have him favoured by more than this on a hard court, let alone a slow clay court, where I think he has an even larger edge.

He started the year with two very close losses to upstart youngsters, before retiring at the Davis Cup against Slovakia in the first set. His first match here was against another big server, albeit a far more talented one in Marin Cilic (though Cilic is still returning from injury). He ran away with that one after losing the opening set 4-6, and I can’t see why he wouldn’t be likely to do the same against a player that isn’t anywhere near that level in the talent department.

He hits a heavy ball, can dictate play, has strong rally tolerance and he’s tactically astute.

Andrea Vavassori Recent Form

I mentioned earlier that Vavassori can be a tough player to really read in terms of form.

While has straight sets wins this week over Thiago Monteiro and Thiago Seyboth Wild on clay, he’s also managed to lose in lopsided fashion to one Mate Valkusz on hard courts and was beaten fairly comprehensively by Dominik Koepfer earlier this year as well.

Now taking on an experienced clay courter in Djere, I’m not sure the first serve will affect his fellow 28-year-old, nor will the weight of shot or potential net rushing (especially on clay, where it’s much less effective and opponents have more time to execute successful passing shots).

There’s very little in his results or game that makes me optimistic that he has a strong chance to pull off this win, but if he serves well, I suppose anything is possible – just not at a 40% rate that the market is implying he has.

Laslo Djere vs Andrea Vavassori H2H – Stat of the Match

These two haven’t played before, and that alone is pretty telling to me.

Though they’re both 28 years old, Djere has spent the last several years plying his trade at the ATP Tour level. Vavassori, on the other hand, has spent the vast majority of his time in Challenger Tour fields and grand slam qualifying. With a large enough sample size available to us, I don’t think it’s unfair to draw the conclusion that Djere is a much, much better player.

In terms of the elo ratings in this one? Djere leads by over 150 points. Without a head-to-head advantage, close elo rating or being close in the talent department, I’m not sure why the market is so keen to give Vavassori credit.

Perhaps I’m missing something, but I’m willing to trust my handicap and stake out a large position behind the world No. 35.
