Thursday, it’s back to the smaller event in the altitude of Mexico, as Katrina Scott squares off with Laura Pigossi for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Talk about a contrast in players here. Pigossi is a veteran grinder of the lower circuits, while Scott is an up-and-coming prospect. The Brazilian is a clay-court specialist, while Scott is more adept on hard courts. Pigossi has experience playing in the altitude on red dirt, Scott is one match into her career in such conditions.
Yet the older, more experienced specialist on the surface is the underdog.
That, to me, doesn’t make sense for a few reasons. For starters, this is Scott’s first real test both on red clay and at extreme altitude. Pigossi, on the flip side, is well-acclimated to the conditions, having reached the semifinals in Cali this season, while also reaching the final in Bogota in 2022.
Scott is also the player that will be forced into going for more winners, since Pigossi is the established pusher and defender in this one. We know first hand how players that are forced into trying to finish points can lose the handle on their shots after watching Grabher struggle mightily the other day.
While Scott is more likely than not to be a strong player in the coming years, the red dirt and at altitude are not the optimal conditions for her success at this point.

After the Grabher loss and seeing consistent players give more aggressive styles fits in altitude the last few days, I’ve adjusted how much I’m weighing experience in altitude on clay into my handicap.
In this case, Pigossi should be a strong favourite for me. With Scott less consistent by default, she’ll be forced into looking for more winners, and that can be a disaster. Her win over her compatriot in her first match was lopsided, but Whitney Osuigwe has very few weapons and lacks consistency. Plus, since being a heralded prospect, she has completely fizzled out.
With Pigossi having success at extreme altitude (Bogota final last year), having showcased she can outlast opponents (just look at the scoreline against Andrea Gamiz last round) and fitting the profile of the player that can wait out errors in the thinner air well, I have her as a favourite in this matchup.
