Katerina Siniakova vs Nadia Podoroska Ningbo Open Expert Tip: Oppose Clay Courter in Fast Conditions
Katerina Siniakova vs Nadia Podoroska (Ningbo Open): Thursday, September 28th
A nice result from Tokyo on Wednesday, as Veronika Kudermetova was clearly a tier or two above Kayla Day, just as we expected her to be.
For Thursday’s WTA preview, we’ll head back to the Ningbo Open and look at Katerina Siniakova vs Nadia Podoroska.

Katerina Siniakova vs Nadia Podoroska Expert Tip
It’s another matchup on Thursday where we’re seeing a competent multi-surface player take on a much more clay-centric opponent, this time in Ningbo with Siniakova taking on the Argentine in Podoroska.
With two strong performances under her belt this week, I’m happy to back the Czech to keep on chugging.
She’s an extremely form-based player, with a title this season, another late last season and a nice semifinal run in the spring. She’s also gone on a seven-match losing skid between some of the success.
Back in form this week and with a well-rounded game and more comfort on quicker courts, I’m happy to back her to win this by two breaks of serve. With her game being a little more volatile and her tendency to play some more lopsided sets, however, I am going to play this a little more cautiously with my bet sizing.
Odds as at 1:00 am UK Time on September 28th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Katerina Siniakova Recent Form
Breaking down Siniakova’s form for any prolonged period and trying to make sense of it is, to be blunt, a fool’s errand. She is easily one of the most volatile and frustrating players on tour, especially considering the fact that when she’s playing well, she legitimately looks like a top-20 contender and is capable of beating some top end players (just ask Elena Rybakina, who she beat in the final in Slovenia around this time last year).
If we go back to that tournament in Portoroz from mid-September of last year, Siniakova has won two titles (the other on grass this season in Bad Homburg), reached the semifinals in Merida and now has another quarterfinal in Ningbo on her resume.
Not too shabby, even if those are all 250-level events.
The flip side? She’s lost 12 times this season in the opening round or qualifying of a tournament.
It’s the wild inconsistency that actually sums up her game fairly well. Her serve isn’t weak, and I actually think her abilities from the baseline are undervalued. She’s also very savvy at net and knows when to approach and when to stay at the baseline.
When she finds her groove though, she certainly enjoys making deep runs. With an opponent in this matchup that is no hard-court aficionado, I do think she’s got a great shot at making a third semifinal in 2023.
Nadia Podoroska Recent Form
Don’t be fooled by the 11-10 record on outdoor hard courts for the 26-year-old this season. She has very few quality wins, and even the two I’d give to her as impressive have caveats. In the opening round here, she beat Xiyu Wang. A strong, big hitting hard courter, but one off a title last week in Guangzhou in front of a home crowd that was a very emotional experience.
Backing that up is always tough.
The other decent win? Kayla Day at an ITF in the spring. We just went over Day and her capabilities and where I power rank her in the women’s game in Wednesday’s preview, where we detailed why she’s a tad overvalued.
Other than that, nothing jumps off the page.
Podoroska has a big forehand, but because of the weight of shot she relies on, it’s less effective on hard courts. Furthermore, power doesn’t always translate to success on quicker surfaces. Many clay courters are used to trying to hit through clay, where the ball sits up and they have more time to set up their big forehands. On hard courts, where the ball gets on you quicker, many players more comfortable on clay can be rushed and see those shots turn into errors.
Katerina Siniakova vs Nadia Podoroska H2H – Stat of the Match
There are no prior meetings on the professional circuit between these two, and I’m anxious to see if Siniakova can take care of business in an efficient manner, with an opponent that lacks quality wins in these conditions and can be rushed.
Her raw hard-court elo rating is over 120 points higher, while her blended elo rating for hard surfaces is about 125 points better than Podoroska. This really should be a routine victory.
