Wednesday Tennis Best Bet: ATP Newport, John Isner vs Corentin Moutet
John Isner vs Corentin Moutet Best Bet: Wednesday, July 19th
Well, much like Milos Raonic, Kevin Anderson manages to win his first match back on the grass courts in a long, long time. Gabriel Diallo appeared almost shell shocked throughout that match. Losing that badly and being broken as often as he was by a poor returning 37-year-old who hadn’t played a pro match in almost a year and a half was certainly a poor look for the Canadian. Tough one to swallow for us from a betting perspective as well, but this is a season that will see a high volume of bets, so it’s important to see this as a drop in the proverbial bucket.
For Wednesday, we’ll stick with the final grass-court event of the season on the ATP Tour in Newport, and take a deeper look at the match between John Isner and Corentin Moutet.

John Isner vs Corentin Moutet Preview
Wed, July 19th, 20:30 (UK Time)
A bit of a clash of styles in this one, as the crafty Frenchman takes on the towering Isner and his booming serves.
There is no debating that Isner will have the edge when comparing the service games. In terms of movement, matchup and athleticism though? That is all Moutet.
Wednesday should be a fun one for other reasons as well. There should be a fun dynamic with the crowd in this one, as Moutet got into it a bit with them in his first-round clash with another American in Eliot Spizzirri, while Isner is the crowd’s compatriot and has done well here in the past.
In terms of the actual play, Moutet should be fine behind his own serve, with Isner coming off a long match the day prior and not being the most prolific returner to begin with. The question becomes can the fiery Frenchman keep his cool and be patient enough to wait for the opportunities to apply pressure in Isner’s service games?
He has the big inside-out forehand that plays to the backhands of right-handed players, and his court craft, including slices and dropshots are perfect when it comes to playing an immobile opponent that is approaching 40 years old.
If he can keep his cool and play a cleaner match than Alex Bolt did in the opening round, he’s definitely the favourite for me to come through this one.

I can understand why the market likes Isner on these courts. The booming serve is so tough to return on the lightning-fast grass courts, he’s had success here in the past and he finally snapped a losing skid on Tuesday.
That said, he’s still getting up there in age, he needed three sets to beat an inferior lefty in Bolt in the first round and something I don’t believe the market is taking into account enough is the fact that the American doesn’t get a day off before playing again.
That last point is key for a few reasons. First, his opponent did get a rest day. Second, he’s almost 40 – rest and fatigue is more important as players get up there in age. Finally, he looked as though his legs were starting to go in the second set of the last match, before he rallied in the third and got some sloppy play from his Aussie counterpart.
With that in mind, I’ll take Moutet here, who was impressive outside of losing his cool late in the first round against Spizzirri. He’s got the game to topple Isner, is in a much better spot in his career in terms of his talent arc and he’s got the rest advantage as well.
