Tuesday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Wimbledon, Jessica Pegula vs Marketa Vondrousova
Jessica Pegula vs Marketa Vondrousova Best Bet: Tuesday, July 11th
It was a blistering start for Ons Jabeur on Centre Court, and she never ended up relenting, bringing us a nice winner on our first women’s preview of the week. Not only was the variety clearly impactful, but the wind helped blunt Petra Kvitova’s power – which is about the only thing she really does well.
For Tuesday, the quarterfinals get underway from the All England Club, and we’ll preview the match featuring Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova.

This may sound a tad counter-intuitive since we just backed her on Friday, but Vondrousova and her game aren’t that well suited to grass. Nor is her game the type that Pegula would typically struggle against.
It’s been an incredible run for the Czech, but she’s had a dream of a run out in terms of her draw. She began with a player new to the surface in Peyton Stearns (and nearly lost a set in that one), then beat Veronika Kudermetova (this was an admittedly strong win), then beat Donna Vekic coming off a long, emotional match without the traditional day off to rest and a relatively weaponless player in her countrywoman Marie Bouzkova in the fourth round.
She doesn’t have the biggest serve or the most powerful groundstrokes. She hits with a lot of spin, which isn’t typically conducive to success on grass, and she’s playing a fellow rock from the baseline in terms of consistency in the American.
For Pegula, she’s looking to reach her first-ever semifinal at Wimbledon – or at any grand slam for that matter. The 29-year-old has somehow managed to reach the quarterfinal of all four major events on the calendar, yet has never been past this stage at any of them.
A strong counterpuncher with a sneaky pace of her own, Pegula’s game is so well-rounded, but it lacks the kind of domination that helps propel players from the top-3 or top-5 to that No. 1 spot in the world rankings.
Generally, when she plays the more elite players in the women’s game, she struggles to keep pace and can be overwhelmed by their power.
That’s why this matchup is likely the best shot she’s had to reach a semifinal at grand slam level. She has a bit more pace to her shots, she can hang in the prolonged rallies, her serve is a bit stronger and she hits a flatter ball, which should help her when she’s on the front foot.
Jessica Pegula vs Marketa Vondrousova Best Bet
I think we’re seeing a major overvaluation of Vondrousova on grass courts here thanks to a relatively lacklustre run through four rounds.
Pegula has the game needed to help neutralise her strengths, is more suited to grass courts and has a bit more attacking flair to her game.
I have her winning this over 60% of the time, making the 1.73 odds available in the market a nice price to get involved.
- Selection: Pegula to win
- Best Odds: 1.79 (Pinnacle)
- Stakes: 4/10
