Nicolas Jarry vs Yannick Hanfmann Prediction and Tip, Stats, Form, H2H, February 20th
IMAGO / PanoramiC - Yannick Hanfmann TENNIS - Open Australie 2024.

We only get about a month of clay court tennis at this time of year before the tour swings back over to hard courts for a month, so let’s take advantage with a preview from the ATP Tour’s Rio Open.

It’s the lone 500-level tournament during this South American clay swing, and it attracts a fairly decent field.

Let’s preview Nicolas Jarry vs Yannick Hanfmann for Tuesday.

I do think that Jarry has done enough in the last year or two for him to warrant favourite status in this match, but I think this price has gotten a bit carried away.

Think of it this way, in a match with two strong servers, guys who can hit with power and have a heavy shot and two similar players who have both started playing the best tennis of their careers in the last year, do you believe one of them should be expected to win this match under 40% of the time? I certainly don’t, and that’s why I’ve taken a position backing the German.

Read on for more expert insights.

Nicolas Jarry Recent Form

Talk about perplexing results to break down, Jary had one of the more bizarre three-match stretches you’ll see this past weekend.

He snuck by Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires, Argentina, despite trailing by a set and early break in the second. Etcheverry tore a muscle in that one and was forced to retire. How does the Chilean respond to a relatively mediocre effort? By beating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

Surely that would vault him to the title then, right? Wrong. Jarry goes from beating Alcaraz to losing to Facundo Diaz Acosta in the final.

Just like I did on Friday when I backed him because he was too good to be valued well below 50%, I’ll go back to the well on one of his matches, but from the opposite standpoint, this time opposing him for that same reason.

There’s no doubting the pace he can generate, but he’s squaring off with someone that is competent in those regards in his own right.

Yannick Hanfmann Recent Form

It’s been a slow start to 2024 for the big German.

He started just 1-3, but with those matches coming on hard courts, I’m sure he’s happy to be back on clay, where he is most comfortable and where his heavy topspin plays far more effectively.

Hanfmann struggled in Buenos Aires against Jarry’s lefty compatriot, Alejandro Tabilo, but he did pick up a pair of wins in Cordoba to reach his lone quarterfinal of the season.

With his ability to serve well and dictate play behind his serve, I would expect him to keep things close here and ensure he has a shot to pull off the upset.

Nicolas Jarry vs Yannick Hanfmann H2H – Stat of the Match

This is another clay court head-to-head that has been about as close as they come. These two have been pitted against one another three times in the past, and Jarry has a pair of wins (one in two tiebreaks and another in three sets), while Hanfmann has one (a straight-sets victory).

With both being tall guys with a big first serve and decent pace on their groundstrokes who both prefer clay, it shouldn’t be all that shocking that they continue to play very close contests.

I don’t know about you, but if I expect a match to be pretty close, I’d rather be holding a bet slip that has odds of 2.69, rather than 1.51.
