I’m not going to overthink this one in backing the Aussie. On quicker, lower-bouncing courts, he’s a legitimate ATP Tour-level player for me, and he’s proven as much in recent weeks.
His serve is strong, he can hit from the baseline and these NCAA-style indoor hard courts are perfect for his game.
I respect Kwiatkowski and his improvement in form, but he’s not in the same realm in terms of quality in these conditions as Duckworth, and I’m not sure Duckworth being favoured by just one break of serve is correctly priced.

James Duckworth Recent Form
It’s been a nice late-season stretch for the 31-year-old veteran from Sydney.
After some struggles during the spring and summer, the Aussie rebounded nicely with back-to-back Challenger Tour trophies in Playford and Shenzhen in October.
He didn’t fare as well in his second match on the west coast of North America, but even after a week off, that’s a tough travel spot and he can certainly be excused for one poor showing from his last 12 matches.
As for the surface preference I alluded to earlier, almost all of his success this season has come in India, China, Australia or elevated conditions in Mexico. All those places are known to reward those who prefer quicker courts.
Even in his losses in Newport (on grass) and in Atlanta (very quick conditions), his losses came from a set-up.
His lengthy win in the opening round this week would concern me, but Cannon Kingsley has a strong serve and is used to these NCAA indoor courts, having played very recently at Ohio State University. Not to mention, Duckworth had a day off to rest and recuperate before this contest.
Thai Son Kwiatkowski Recent Form
It’s been a rebuilding kind of season for the American, who has been playing some decent tennis of late, but primarily against lesser opposition at the ITF Tour level and in Challenger qualifying rounds.
He has played some stronger players close, but we’ve also often seen him fade in some deciding sets, which makes me believe that he’s still not at 100%.
His serve also isn’t top-notch, which makes giving up a three-game head start a bit more palatable in quicker conditions.
James Duckworth vs Thai Son Kwiatkowski H2H – Stat of the Match
These two have met twice before, with Duckworth winning each of those matches on hard courts. The matches happened five years ago, however, and it’s tough to put too much stock into them.
The one positive I’ll take from the head-to-head in this matchup, though, is that in 2018 Kwiatkowski was a more successful player and wasn’t coming back from an injury that year, meaning Duckworth’s advantage here might be even greater in this contest.
