I’m going back to the trusted exercise of backing a close match between a strong server and an underdog that prefers quick conditions and can hold their own to keep a match close themselves.
Hurkacz is notorious for squeaking out close contests against inferior competition and moving to a quicker court against decent players has not changed that this week.
We started the week trusting Flavio Cobolli and he came through for us and I’m going to do the same with the in-form Marcos Giron.
The fact that Hurkacz is almost never broken himself – especially on grass – assists with getting this over the total and alleviates concerns about the underdog winning too quickly.

Hubert Hurkacz Recent Form
Hurkacz has yet to drop a set this week and his serve is looking as strong as ever on the grass, but the fact remains that against a younger player who can be rushed by pace and doesn’t have a lot of experience on the surface, he won by just one break and needed a 7-5, 7-6 scoreline to advance. He also won by a singular break of serve margin against James Duckworth in the second round. The Aussie is a decent quick courter, but not exactly a player that has had a stand out season or who has the talent worth writing home about.
I remain unimpressed by the big server in terms of how he’s winning matches. I do think it’s admirable that he wins so many of these close encounters, showing he has some sort of clutch aspect to his game that is tough to quantify.
The lack of dominance speaks to his limitations, however, and with Giron playing some solid tennis, I think he’s in for a battle more often than not on Friday.
Marcos Giron Recent Form
Strong start to the season, really poor recent months and now starting to find form again. Giron’s success seems to be ebbing and flowing with the calendar and the court speed of each event.
It’s no surprise that his most successful spells in 2024 have coincided with the portions of the calendar that see the ATP Tour play on faster surfaces.
With an opponent who tends to play very close sets, Giron having upset a pair of big favourites already and the American preferring quick courts and playing his best at these kinds of tournaments, I’m happy to back him to keep things close.
Hubert Hurkacz vs Marcos Giron H2H – Stat of the Match
The lone meeting between these two actually came on grass at WImbledon three years ago. Hurkacz won that one with relative ease.
A few caveats here though. First, that was when Giron was still languishing on the Challenger Tour and took place when he was a shell of the player he is now. Second, much of his improvement in the last year or so has come thanks to his improved service game.
I highly doubt we’ll be seeing Hurkacz rack up the lopsided sets on Friday in Halle.
