Hard not to back the Brit in this spot against a lower-ranked player who doesn’t have much to offer on indoor hard courts. The 21-year-old Charaeva has played some strong tennis this summer but is still ranked just inside the top 400 despite having amassed 32 wins this year on the pro circuit.
Watson has a stronger game, has played at a higher level all season and should be able to hit and angle through the Russian’s defensive play.

Heather Watson Recent Form
It’s been a tale of two seasons for Watson, who has fared pretty well when she dips down to the lower levels of professional tennis, but has had a tough time (outside of Nottingham on grass) when playing at the main tour level.
Part of that is obviously the increased level of competition, but her draws in early rounds – whether in qualifying or the main draw – were pretty tough to make matters worse.
Nonetheless, she did have that run on home soil in Nottingham that saw her reach the semifinals as a qualifier and has made the quarterfinals in Warsaw and Hua Hin. At the ITF level, she did reach a pair of finals on hard courts in Calvi and Glasgow.
As for her game, it should suit the conditions well in Andorra. Her serve should play up on courts that seem to be rewarding good first serves and her flat hitting on these courts is another advantage in looking to take time away from Charaeva.
More than anything, it’s another example of a player with more pedigree and talent on the surface being undervalued as a favourite that makes me like this bet.
Alina Charaeva Recent Form
I think one has to tip their hat to Charaeva for coming through the opening round from a set down, but one has to wonder if Oceane Dodin was playing at 100% in the second and third sets.
Other than that, it’s been a slog of lower-level tournaments, with very, very few impressive wins, regardless of surface. There are plenty of losses to women who can’t even sniff WTA Tour qualifying draws as well along the way.
I know Charaeva is only 21, but the style she employs really does feel like a very low-ceiling kind of game.
There are a lot of slices that cross the net with way too much air under them, the serve is far too weak for even quicker courts and conditions to help out and she plays far too little attacking tennis.
This is a great chance for Watson to add another quarterfinal to her resume, and with her draw leaving her as one of the favourites in her half of the draw to reach the final, the possibility of being seeded in Australian Open qualifying is still present against a player she should beat by a wide margin.
Heather Watson vs Alina Charaeva H2H – Stat of the Match
No previous match was contested between these two.
With Charaeva having so few matches played where statistics are tracked, her data is really hard to form any opinions on either here.
I will say, the hold percentages and both points won behind first and second serves in the limited sample are not good. Throw in her performance in the first round against Dodin, where she played an underpowered match and style that doesn’t typically work in these conditions and I’m confident she should struggle in this one far more often than not.
