IMAGO / Hasenkopf - Yannick Hanfmann (GER), Australian Open 2024, Melbourne Park.

The rain has made a mess of a few days down at the ATP Tour’s Rio Open so far this week, but I do like the price on a bet in Brazil in Yannick Hanfmann vs Mariano Navone. Let’s delve into that matchup and see where the value lies!

As impressive as Navone has been since last summer, I still simply don’t see enough in his game for me to believe he can make the jump to tour level and be as competitive as these odds suggest he should be.

Rigid solidity, precise hitting and a heavy forehand may be enough to grind out win after win against mostly underpowered players in weaker South American Challenger Tour fields, but stepping up to play with the better players on the ATP Tour is a different task entirely.

Hanfmann looked strong in beating Nicolas Jarry, has a strong first serve, a nice kick second serve, hits a big ball and plays with plenty of weight on his shots from the baseline as well. He’s not scared of longer rallies and with the only real offensive groundstrokes on the court in this match, I have him as a bigger favourite than this.

Read on for more Expert Insights.

Yannick Hanfmann Recent Form

Hanfmann’s win on Tuesday night against Jarry was a much-needed one for the big German, who had come in with back-to-back straight-sets losses to Luciano Darderi and Alejandro Tabilo.

Now, the former was a quarterfinal match, as he did win a pair of matches in Cordoba, but those wins weren’t the most convincing of performances. Now, he almost blew a pair of leads against the Chilean here in the opening round, but the fact is, Jarry is a bona fide tour-level player, so needing a close third set is nothing to be ashamed of.

We’re still waiting for his game to click for an extended period without dips in form, but his serve and forehand are legitimately dangerous on clay courts and he can absolutely stick around in longer rallies as well.

There’s no question in my mind that he’s the better player in this match. I also believe he can hit with enough heaviness and work his way forward to be able to penetrate the Navone defences.

Mariano Navone Recent Form

I mentioned earlier that this may be a big step up for Navone, and if we look at his results so far this year, I think you’ll see why. Though he is 9-4 so far on clay, four of those wins came while the tour was still playing down under in Australia, with another four victories coming in qualifying this week and in Cordoba.

His lone quality win to this point was his opening round takedown of Federico Coria, and even that came from 1-6 down, with Coria fading physically after a lot of tennis played in the three weeks prior.

He may be head-shakingly consistent and solid from the baseline, but he lacks too much in attack for me and can be pushed around by more tour-level regulars.

Yannick Hanfmann vs Mariano Navone H2H – Stat of the Match

With Hanfmann now a tour-level pro (and even prior to that, he was found primarily in the tougher European fields) and Navone being more of a South American regional Challenger Tour clay courter, it’s no surprise these two have yet to cross paths professionally.

It’s hard to compare these two statistically, with Navone possessing very little tour-level clay court data to parse through. We do have Hanfmann with a slight lead in the elo ratings, however.
